What's a good warm-up race for IMLP?...or camp instead?

Happy New Year all....may 2010 bring you BIG watts, HIGH speed, and NO injuries!

I live in Ct. and have IM Lake Placid scheduled as my "A" race for this year. Now contemplating a warm-up race, or perhaps the ENLP camp instead....thoughts?

THANK YOU!!!

  • I think in the past RnP have discouraged the concept of "warm-up" races as a way to prepare for IM. They have recommended training is a better return on investment than racing, for example a HIM, in terms of getting faster on race day. That being said, if there is a race you want to race because it looks like fun and would enjoy that experience in and of itself then race and enjoy. I have done Mooseman before with IMLP to follow and enjoyed both races. I also did the IMLP camp last year and that was a blast as well.

  • Gus,
Sign up for the TOC camp in May. I signed up a few weeks ago but there should be space still available. Rich says it's a great lead in to IMLP or IMCDL. He also claims it's going to be EPIC!!! Can't wait!

    work WORKS!!

PS, also doing REV 3 HIM in June...good lead up race!
  • I'm pretty sure there is going to be an LP training weekend sometime in June to coincide with the first race rehearsal.  This is a great way to get in a bunch of volume and learn the course.  I think they did it as a camp last year, but there was talk about an informal weekend this time around.  A bunch of us did our own "camp" around the same time.  It turned into a nice way to meet some ENrs.

  • I'm doing Eagleman the weekend of the scheduled EN camp 6/10 - 6/13. I'm probably going to do the fireman ironman camp on 6/18 - 6/20, any other EN people going to be there?
  • I just wanted to jump in and echo Kevin's response.

The EN guidence from RnP is that a "warm-up" race within the 12 weeks prior to your Ironman is not a good idea. Prior to 12 weeks out race as much as you want, but at 12 weeks it's time to focus on training and being prepared for your IM.

A half ironman raced at HIM intensity during IM training requires too much time off before an after the event and will mess up your build up to an IM. A half ironman at ironman pace is a really expensive training day and likely not even as good of a workout as one of the 3 or 4 hour rides in the EN IM plan.

If you really want to peak and do you best at IMLP, I recomend not racing a HIM for 12 weeks prior to it and instead do the training camp or just stick to the IM plan. Post over in the macro level feedback from the coachs thread and they will give you there thoughts on the best timing of the camp.
  • thnx for the input all....Mike TOC sounds awesome, have to see if that's gonna fly with SAU and work ("make money" work that is). Cheers!
  •  David let's keep in touch on this....like it.

  •  hey!

I am in CT too and will do LP as my A race this year. Last year a bunch of us did our 2nd RR in Placid and made an epic weekend out of it. IMHO, far better than a race to prepare you for Lake Placid. With the taper and recovery a race forces, me thinks it is not the best option! image

If you want to join in on the RR festivities, let me know!

BTW, I am right outside of Hartford, where are you?

JC! glad to see you are still lurking out there.  I think Mr. Demello is going to be planning a super-sized weekend on the Cape this year and we'll certainly do a "camp" at LP again.

  • Tour de Cali, while offering serious bike volume and intensity, is also straying (within 12 weeks) from a strict IM plan for a July IM. But worth it.

  • ToC will be the best, most epic high volume opportunity for you. Campers put up 25hrs of cycling, likely more with the better weather this year, and north of 1500 TSS for the week.

If you can't make that, please see our Northeast Rally, on the IMLP course, in early June. Go to the camps tab above, more details coming later.

2 slots available for ToC, by the way.

  • more info from RnP on this soon...
  •  Hi - sorry for the delay in responding.....I am definitely interested in joining! I am in Darien, 40 minutes or so south.

  •  Rich would love to join TOC, but cannot fit that in. Will look for NE Rally, thanks!!

  • My husband and I did IMLP last year and went up frequently to ride the course. If you can get up there ( CT can be a bit a a drive), riding that course as much as you can is huge mentally and physically. Northwoods inn on main street in Placid has $99 rate if you say you are training for IMLP on the weekends or if you want to rough it, we would camp at Wilmington Notch right on the course and get up early mornings and just ride from right outside our tent!

For our first IM we went with the thought process of doing a "warm-up" race and did Tin Man but honestly to tell you, RnP are right- You can get in huge useful blocks of training those weekends versus prepping for a race and tearing your body down doing it. Listen to them, the race rehearsals REALLY work if you do them.
