Knee issue

My last and fist IM I had to walk/run the last 13 miles becuse of a knee issue. During a 20 mile training run I felt a knee pain , left leg on the outside.

I went for an MRI , results read- very small popliteal cyst, very small osteochondral lesion measuring 6 mm in size with irregular overlying articular cartilage involving the anterior third of the latereral femoral condyle. No bone bruise.

The retropatellar cartilages are diffusely thinned laterally. There is also chondromalacia involving the trochlear cartilare. The patellar retinacula are intact . there are a few small subchondral cysts within the proximal tibia.

Any one want to take a wack at this speak ? I'm lost except for some internet break down.

Thx D

  • Call your ortho surgeon.

The most troubling thing is the osteochondral lesion, though its classified as "very small". Still, its 6 mm. And the overlying cartilage is thinned. The good news, i guess, is that its not an osteochondral fracture. Sounds like there's some other degenerative changes going on too.

It may be something that PT (flexibility, mobility and strength) and rest can help to take care of. But, I'm not an orthopedic surgeon. I dont deal with these things daily. Find a good orthosurgeon (I'd prefer to send you to one with a knee subspecialty) and listen! Also, you should hold off running for now until you're cleared.

  • Thanks Andrerw appt is made. I spent a lot of time looking up this stuff on the net and just got confused .
  • David,
How old are you? my guess is you are middle-aged?

What this says is you have some mild degenrative changes, which might down the road lead to OA.

A couple of answers though, might help clarify what happened with you at IM:
how long after IM did you have the MRI? did your knee swell up (or was the swelling only localized on the outside of your knee?)

If I was a betting man, without laying any hands on you, I would think this was an episode of IT band syndrome.

Keep me posted, and I'd be happy to steer you towards a couple of good orthopods (or even happy to see you in boston, if you feel like driving!!!!)

  • @ Hasan ,Age 54 I had a MRI last week. No swelling at all and not ITB which I'm all to familare with. I'm looking toward Synvisc One and hoping to but this issue to bed.

I'm not in the Boston area I live in South Jersey . I will post results  thank you.
  • @ Hanson , I like your training goals .... let me know how you make out with that 500 FTP ..
  • @Hasan: 500ftp and 65 vdot. The vdot will be at half marathon distance, right?
