6 Weeks to Go Featuring Soak Up The Sun by Sheryl Crow

Happy Sunday IMC Rock Stars!

How was your week?   Ready for a long run and another hard 4.5 hour bike session in a few days?

I did my first RR today and it kind of stunk, to be frank. It poured rain, my tummy was not happy with my nutrition and my computer crapped out at 91 miles. VERY FRUSTRATING. I got my first good look at IM racing with power though, which was nice! I went with and IF of 0.70 and that was clearly too much as it brought me in with a TSS of 320. I’ll give the next RR a shot at 0.68, tweak my nutrition a bit and hope for sun! Once I got warmed up the run was no-drama-mama. Certainly not flashy but felt “normal” by 30’ in. Time for bed. Have a great week!

This week’s song is Soak Up The Sun by Sheryl Crow.

It’s struggling to get out of the sixties around here. Please send sun. I’m worried the first heat acclimatization I’ll get is on race day…

My friend the Communist

Holds meetings in his RV

I can't afford his gas

So I'm stuck here watching TV

I don't have digital

I don't have diddle squat

It's not having what you want

It's wanting what you've got

I'm gonna soak up the sun

I'm gonna tell everyone

To lighten up

I'm gonna tell 'em that

I've got no one to blame

For every time I feel lame

I'm looking up

I'm gonna soak up the sun

I'm gonna soak up the sun

I've got a crummy job

It don't pay near enough

To buy the things it takes

To win me some of your love

Every time I turn around

I'm Looking up, you're looking down

Maybe something's wrong with you

That makes you act the way you do

I'm gonna soak up the sun

I'm gonna tell everyone

To lighten up

I'm gonna tell 'em that

I've got no one to blame

For every time I feel lame

I'm looking up

I'm gonna soak up the sun

While it's still free

I'm gonna soak up the sun

Before it goes out on me

Don't have no master suite

But I'm still the king of me

You have a fancy ride, but baby

I'm the one who has the key

Every time I turn around

I'm looking up, you're looking down

Maybe something's wrong with you

That makes you act the way you do

Maybe I am crazy too

I'm gonna soak up the sun

I'm gonna tell everyone

To lighten up

I'm gonna tell 'em that

I've got no one to blame

For every time I feel lame

I'm looking up

I'm gonna soak up the sun

I'm gonna tell everyone

To lighten up

I'm gonna tell 'em that

I've got no one to blame

For every time I feel lame

I'm looking up

I'm gonna soak up the sun

Got my 45 on

So I can rock on

  • Did RR this weekend as well. Unfortunately I've had a piriformis problem surface 2 weeks ago and it's a problem. Lots of good training and gains up to that point. Doing art and massage. May stand down this week. Terrible timing. Hope everyone else's RR went well.

  • I did the RR #1 this weekend too. Heading into it pretty zapped though I have to say. Thursday's long run, then Friday's long swim, and then the non-EN prescribed 40K sparky ride to warm up for the Barking Frog 5K. I had blown off the run test a couple of weeks ago knowing this organized 5K was coming up. Much easier to go hard with other people around! And I always run better off the bike so I did a 40K bike warm up before the 7 pm start. Ran a new PB of 21:41 that got me two more VDot points so I was happy!

But Saturday was not easy. I rode the 6 hours (no computer, no power, just HR), had one flat early in the morning, but other than that pretty uneventful. Hot day, drank lots, got my 1500 calories in on the bike. The 6 mile run was not that fun - hot and humid. Ran what I thought was easy (HR said zone 1), but clearly too fast for IM race day. Need to practice slowing down. Really enjoyed the day off yesterday!

Hope everybody else had a successful (or at least educational!) day out there!

  • Ann that 5K time is smoking fast.  I have not had a chance to download my data from RR #1 that I did on Saturday.  I had some friends to ride the first loop of 56 miles.  I tried to ride steady in the aero position and I would maintain my watts.  Sometimes the group would get frisky and start to go hard.  Then I would jump onto a wheel and maintain my race watts.  When they slowed down I would drop back and ride several bike lengths behind maintaining my watts.  I was a real education about legal drafting and why the top pros ride in packs and how hard it is to go off the front solo.  The weather was cool and overcast and I wore a jacket which is unusual in Southern California in July.

My stomach felt great because I took only a few calories.  I have had trouble since 2003 in races because I lose my stomach contents.  I probably have some race stimulation nerves and taking in too many calories.  Run went well and legs were tired.  I was not able to train all week because of life induced taper.  So I rode EN style ABP ride on Sunday and met my wife and her horse for a trail run.  The RR was a long time in aero for me and my "undercarriage" was sore.  Need to put more But'r on the junk next time.   So I felt pretty good all weekend until this morning's swim.  I felt like crap.  I got through the main sets but it was a REAL challenge.  Goes to show you that some days you have it and sometimes you don't.
