New bike nutrition infinit ? after some long rides this weekend...

I've determined that on hot days I can not handle solely infinit and water.  I need a change of something, so I'm trying to figure out what to do and looking for some feedback before the long ride this weekend. Until now, I've done my 250 cal/hr of infinit and water on the bike.  The calorie amount is working great with me, but I'm already sick of it image

I'm thinking one of 3 options, and am open to other suggestions-

1. Have less Infinit per hour and add a sports drink with water to change it up a bit (so figure 1.5 scoops Infinit plus sports drink and water per hour, still roughly 250 cals per hour)

2. Have one flavor infinit for the first half of the ride, and switch flavors mid ride.

3. Down to 1.5 scoops of infinit / hour, add a gel on the hour

Thoughts?  I really don't want to go over 250 cals/hr, Im 5'0 and about 125 lbs.

Thanks in advance!

  • @Lauren: Doesn't work why? Sick of the flavor? Need something solid? GI issues?
  • It was hot hot hot all weekend, and I was so sick of straight water. I was drinking as much of it as I could, and still didnt have to use the bathroom at all (on a 6 hr ride). I think mentally it gets hard to keep drinking all that water, and only that, for so long.
  • It is is a sick of water taste thing, you could bring the electrolytes in your Infinit down and use a product like Nuun to add some flavor/electrolytes to your water. You could also add in some occasional solids - fig newtons, strawberry newtons, twizzlers, PBJ, those pretzel rolls with peanut butter in them. . . .
  • I've been using Nuun to flavor my water, and that's all I've been using, on rides up to 3.5 hours, for the last few months. It's been working for me!
When I kick up into the 4+ hour range on the bike rides, then I'll switch back to Infinit (about half dosage).
  •  When I need a change-up from my Infinit on the bike, I go with a version of #3: I tak a Clif Shot Blok.  Since I discovered them I have completely stopped taking gels.  They come in discrete units of 33 cal each, pack easily, chew easily, digest easily, with no gel pak mess or slime everywhere.  GU also makes a version, although I prefer Clif.  If I just want a change of taste and texture, I may also use a small package of Fig Newtons, or a small bag (~1 oz) of mixed nuts (salted).  Try it out, see if it works for you.

  • When I need a change of pace, I reward myself, say every 2 hrs with a Honey Stinger Waffle. Quite possibly the best tasting energy food I have ever had in my entire life!
  • I like to take Heed on my long rides on hot days. For some reason, I actually like how it tastes warm and can drink it for hours.
