Gears for IM Moo Camp

Plan to do the IM Moo camp and only have a 12-25 (Ultegra) that came with the bike.  I am running compacts but know I will need more gears for the climbs.  Not sure all this matters but for disclosure purposes...

Shimano 105 FD // Dura-Ace RD // SRAM Red Cranks // Shimano Chain (not sure what model).

I was looking at the SRAM PG-1070 (Force/Rival) 12-27 cassette.  While I was at it I figured a chain might be worth adding (Shimano of SRAM?!?).  Bike is 4-5 years old but probably less than 2000 miles on the chain and 30% of that from the OS (trainer).

Appreciate any guidance.

  • Get the gears, hold off on the chain until before the race.
  • Thanks Coach - not actually doing the race but hoping to benefit from a big bike weekend and soaking up knowledge from the group.

EDIT - Should I look at something more than a 27?

  • Jeff,
I am running a 12-27 on the back and a 52/39 on front. I have standard cranks, but 650 wheels, so it is a wash. I think you would be well served with a 12-27 on the back.
  • I will be running a 34/50 compact with a 12/27 cassette.

  • Thanks guys - being a weaker cyclist - around 2.6 W/Kg - I wasn't sure if a 28 vs. 27 would make that much of a difference...
  • From a lil' peep - You'll be totally fine with a 12-27.

  • Compact + 27 is fine. FWIW, there is nothing very steep on the IMWI course. There may be a couple tops of hills, out of corner, etc that is 10% for a few pedal strokes, but the 3-4 legit hills out there (legit meaning long, relative to the others) are 4-7%. I think Timberlane is 9% for about .2mi.

  • Thanks again all - appreciate the comments - 12-27 is ordered...
  • same question - Louisville
i am running a 50-34 up front and a 12-24 on the rear, i know on hills it is hard to go the low watts EN way, thoughts?
  • Scott, recommend 26 or 27-12
