Critique my swim - youtube link

Some folks smarter than me mind looking at my swim and telling me what they see?  I've been told I need to increase my turnover, I glide too much, scissor kick, etc.  I need to know what to fix and how to fix it.  Thanks

  • Work on the first half of the position progression drills as it looks like you could work on staying 'long' in the pool more. It looks like that is pushing your legs down in the water. Also, do you breath bi-laterally? That would be good to work on as well.

Just my thoughts...but I am no swim coach.

(It seems I am always the first to respond to all of your posts. Haha.)
  • I am no expert swimmer/coach, but if possible try to do some under water video too. I learned much more by looking at underwater video than video shot from above at different angles.
  • I was thinking I needed the underwater shot. My buddy took that one with my iPhone. I can probably get some other angles.
  • Branan, the thing I immediately noticed is your scissor kicking left leg (I think it was the left). What that says to me is that you are losing your balance when you are pulling with your left arm and your leg is whipping out to compensate. Is your left arm straight underneath you when you pull? If you can, maybe think about the "over the barrel" image when you are pulling under water, this might help. It may also be that the left arm is crossing over the mid line underneath you when you pull. Think about your pull coming down the side of your body rather than the mid line. Ideally, you want your feet kicking so that your big toes are brushing one another behind you in that tube your body has created in the water. Hope this helps! If you get that underwater video, be sure to post it too!

  • Ann - same thing stood out to me - scissor kick - I too suspect it is a balance thing. Note I am far from a swimming expert...

I wonder how the drills with fins when you work on "laying on your armpit" would help. Maybe using a band to get the feeling of quiet legs behind -- "staying in the tube"

A shot straight on would help see if you are crossing the center line.  No doubt underwater would be great as well to better see your catch.

  • No expert here, but agree with the balance assessment -- Triple switch and side balance kicking have helped me a lot here. Especially the side balance kicking. Bad balance = water up your nose. Serious tough love drill.
  • Thanks guys. Its crazy that I had convinced myself that I no longer did that little split kick. Pictures (or video) never lie. I'll check out the triple switch and side balancing drills.

My friend that's a swim coach told me that I don't split kick as bad when I breathe to the left. I'm assuming that would back up the balance theory.

  •  Even a video of you coming straight towards the camera would even be better.

I see a couple of things:

     - Hard to truly tell, but it looks like your arms are crossing over when you stroke.  Try and reach straight out, glide, catch and then pull.

     - Move those hips more.  That is where you get propulsion forward.  More belly button to the wall on both sides.

     - Look straight down, not even slightly forward.  This will bring your hips up and legs up and more inline with the top of the water.

     - And are you wearing board shorts?  If so, get some Speedos!  :-)

     - Find a coach!

Lastly, this site has helped A LOT of folks.  Lots of good vids and advice.  http://www.swimsmooth.com/

    Good luck.
