week of July 18...
Hey! Hope everyone had a great weekend.
I fell off my bike, going nowhere. And you know what, I'm still hurtng Seriously. I was at a light with my R foot on a curb and I started to lose my balance and couldn't get my L foot unclipped and over I went. Forget that I almost had a car run over my hand... I couldn't get up bc I was pinned and unable to unclip. I felt like a total idiot. Fortunately there were 2 women riding and at the light ahead of me and 1 heard and helped... she had to lift the bike off of me so I could unclip. Ridiculous. It all happened about 500 yards from the entrance to the park where I was going to turn around to do my second loop.
I did the second loop without much problem except the bruise I felt developing on my forearm. And I ran. Got home and made up a swim from the week. No problem. Then over a period of a few hours things started to hurt. My left pec and shoulder. I woke up and it was not so good... so I skipped a ride. Ate and started taking motrin. I did 2 hours on the drainer later watching the tour but opted against another swim.
Yesterday, same pain and when I tried to run, holy hell... hard to run when it hurts to swing your arms. Shitty. But. like an idiot, I decided to swim, too... and it was tolerable except when I breathed on my right, something about being outstretched with my left and breathing wasn't working so I had to try to only breathe to one side which is hard when you're in a total 3 stroke breathing rhythym.
Not gonna swim today... I've iced a few times, still taking Motrin... gonna see the ART/Graston guy later today (neither he nor my normal Chiro had any openings yesterday). At least tomorrow is a ride day. I now know I can manage that on my drainer. Hopefully I can get the 30 min run in, too.
Crazy... and this is pain from just falling over going zero miles an hour. I guess I really jammed my pec when I essentially landed with all of my body weight on my left hand. Sigh... it's always something with me.

I'm actually doing the week very normal, or at least as normal as you can in 100+ temps, until Thursday. No long run this week (but ran 80 mi last week!), and I'll do another 90 minute type brick on Thursday, Swim Friday...just a little something Sat, and race Sunday for the World Championship of 3101 Greenwood Road.
Who's going to the Rally next weekend?
Chris is going so he can do the IM course just as an Event itself (and a century ride...never has before) and I'm going obviously for the race prep.
I don't know about you all, but I love 30/30s and was happy to see them on the schedule today. I was in pain but I got through it. I nixed the brick run hoping that some more time will help... knowing tomorrow is not negotiable. So, more ice, motrin, and an anti-inflammatory homeopathic analgesic cream (I got from the ART/chiropractor yesterday). Hopefully it will help. He wrote me a script for an xray to be safe (cracked rib) but he thinks I'm okay and told me I could sit on it a few days to see if I start to feel better (but he won't adjust my back until then). Fingers crossed. I don't have 6 weeks to recover from a broken anything...
As far as updates on training, I just started my IM build up this week. Got my "long run" for the week done this morning with 10 miles in 1:06. Considering the dew point was 73 and temp 80 at 5:30 AM, I'm pretty pleased with it. Managed to take in 16 oz of water before, 28 during, and 16 after and still lost a pound.... got to love humidity.
Next week I'll be doing a 'big tri week' by doing a few days of RAGBRAI. Doing the scheduled bike on Saturday, taking a bit easy on Sunday (swim and run), then long brick rides Monday-Wednesday, and swim Thursday before driving up to Madison. Hope I'm not killing myself too much before camp, but the timing worked out well. And, I need a break from the lonely, long weekend rides before I get burnt out. The heat is not helping my weekend mojo, either.
The 30/30's feel so much easier than the 2:30's. It's a nice change from the longer intervals.
@Williams - What race are you doing? One of my friends had suggested one up in Minnesota, but can't remember what it was, or even when. Good luck! Any predictions you want to share?
@Becky - Hope you're back to good soon! That's gotta be frustrating.
This coming Saturday will be my first century ride followed by a 30 minute run. Looking forward to it but not sure the bottom is yet. Starting at 0400 to beat the heat.
Working to get back into the schedule this week - found a Y just a few blocks from the hotel so getting some swimming in and hope for the interval run tomorrow. Travel all day on Friday but plan being back on track by Saturday.
I am looking forward to the rally - going to double as my big bike week. I hope that I don't overdo it before the gang rides. I am getting into town Wednesday night, so if anyone else is up for pre-rally activities, let me know!
I find myself modifying the workouts due to humidity. I got my 25km during a 2:15 run this morning - started out at 4:45, and was drenched before 5am! I foolishly didn't bring much water, but still felt strong at the end.
Overnight low of 77F tonight. Will try to pull off a 4hr ride - 30 min brick run tomorrow morning. Forecast for tomorrow is 37C (99F), 48C (116F) with humidex. Unbelievable. Montreal on the weekend. I may find myself wandering up the road to check out the Tremblant course.
the heat and humidity here are horrible... it was 88 yesterday when I got up at 6. So, I did the long run on the treadmill. It was hard to complain about the boredom because I would have been dead outside. You know, treadmill running is hard! Constant pace. Yikes. I guess it's probably good to throw a few of those in like it is to still work on a trainer.
So, I skipped the swim Ts and the brick run Wed bc my chest still hurt. Yesterday the run was only mildly uncomfortable. I think I'm on the upswing. I can breathe much more easily, which is a huge plus.
I don't know why but for some reason I assumed that today was just a swim day. Not sure if other Fridays have been (bc I've been known to take Fridays off as my one complete rest day), but as I was leaving for work I glanced at my schedule and saw that we had a 40' run. Oops. Crap. No way I'm gonna make it up tonight bc it's too damn disgusting out (calling for heat index over 115). I guess the fact that yesterdays run was actually 2h16m (not 2h) makes up for some of it. I'll plan on bricks both tomorrow and Sat to make up a bit more. Crap.
I need to call the pool, for some reason I think there's a swim meet tonight... in which case I'll have to make up a swim this weekend and still be down one on the week. Not so great... I'm falling apart this week!
Hard to make predictions. I've taken it easy the last day or two (just hard swims), but in part that was because my legs were pretty beat from my Extreme Run Week and then trying to do that weekend cycling in the crazy heat. So, I'll take what I get. On paper, the course looks relatively flat. If so, and if I turn up and my legs are ok, I'd like to go under 5 hours. Did just over that in KS earlier on a relatively tough bike course (but flat run) in relatively tough conditions (not hot, but windy). PR is 4:48 on a relatively flat course in near perfect conditions.
The big question is whether I will be the household champion or not, though. My son Chris is doing the race (which is why I am doing it), and it will be his first. On paper, we should be close. He's a high school swimmer, so will demolish me there. He's a high school CC runner, so is way faster than me at any distance under half marathon. We raced a half earlier in the year, and I only lost by 30 seconds, but I had been treating it like an A-/B+ race, and he decided to run it about 12 hours before...so take that for what it's worth. I should still be stronger than him on the bike...so we'll see! No idea what the swim waves look like yet.
I haven't been teasing him about it like I might, because I know most people suffer pretty badly on their first half ironman. I've been trying to inculcate him with the ways of EN racing, but we'll see. I even had a strange one-time consulting windfall and bought him a bike PM...so he has the tools...we'll see!
