  • Indoors, always. Outdoors, never.
  • I run with mostly podcasts. When I want to focus on cadence (like indoor running in the winter on a track or TP runs), then I often use a tempo-based playlist. But never just random music
  • Dreadmill (which is almost never) - always

Outside - only long runs when I'm alone.

  • I love to run any type of speedwork with music....iPod shuffle or Sony wireless which I just got....Long Runs...its a either/or proposition...I usually run alone....sometimes I just like the quiet solitude other times prefer the background beat........

X2.   Add to that the "indoor always" and "never in a race" concepts and you've got me covered.

  • i always run with music..short, long runs..all runs. does anyone ride with music. i know i probalby should not, but i do..true confessions
  • When I first started running I always ran with music. It helped mask the "pain". Now that I enjoy running and know that the pain is only temporary I no longer use music. I like the ability to listen to the sounds of the world and my own internal thoughts. This is really the only time were I can truly think.

  • I never use music, I have become accustomed to listening to my breathing, cadence, and general feeling of my current situation, reassessing every minute or two and trying to stay focused on the interval, the hill, the elements, hydration, the outside world or whatever else I need to do to hit that target at that moment. For me, trying to keep up with another device might distract me. I always run outside.  If I ran on a treadmill, the thought of music sounds enticing...........I also like the ability to carrying on conversations internally while running ..............

  • I'm with Shaughn on this question. Inside I'll listen to music or TV, but there is too much going on outside to miss.  Seems I'm seeing a lot more cyclists plugged in.  That I just don't get.

  • Since I can't race with music, I don't train with music. I don't want my brain 'trained' to expect music during a run.

Podcasts, though, I do listen to. In fact, for my long runs I always end up listening to Race Reports just to help remind me why I am doing what I am doing. And then when the playlist is over (or the shuffle just quits!) I think/have conversations with myself.
  • Jefferson Airplane or EN podcasts (I need more EN podcasts though - I can replay most of them in my head without the iphone) on long runs outside or short treadmill runs. Never do long treadmill runs - it never gets that cold in NCAL and I'd rather run in the rain than on a treadmill.
  • Bob, anyone who runs while listening to Jefferson Airplane is better than okay in my book. After all, "We are all outlaws in the eyes of America . . ."
  • I always run with music - except for the last 3-4 weeks before an "A" race. As someone else mentioned want to mirror raceday with no music and also "be at one with oneself while running)...
  • I only run with it on my long runs, some good old Disturbed or some En podcast usually.
  •  My feelings exactly.  Too dangerous to run outside with head phones.  Yesterday we were driving back to Freeport from Rockland and went past a running path.  It was nearly dark and there was this young woman, alone on the path running with head phones on.  Such a crime of opportunity.  It made me sick thinking about my girls being out with head phones and not aware of their surrondings.  I think both men and women need to be more aware of whats going on around them but for sure, women.  Criminals look for women they can overtake unawares.....ok...call me paranoid....I know....sorry....

  • Inside sometimes.  Outside never.  I want to hear everything going on around me - birds, the wind thru the trees, kids laughing on a playground, my own breathing, but most importantly,  CARS.  I've just had too many close calls, and I want all the warning I can get.  It drives me crazy to see a person running on the right-hand side of the road with headphones on.  Gives all runners a bad rep.  And I think people who ride with music have a death wish. 15 years ago I had a good friend killed by a pickup while riding and my friend wasn't even riding with music.

Sheryl - I don't think you are being paranoid, just smart and safe.
