Regensburg on course nutrition.

This is mainly to alert Regensburg racers.   But hearing from folks in the know would be good too.

Notice that the Powerbar products on the course are a lot different than those we have in the USA.

The drink for the bike has caffeine and amino acids.    A lot different than Perform.     Pretty big doses of caffeine.    Best I can tell, each bottle almost the same as two - 12 ounce cokes.

The drink for the run, I THINK, is similar to Powerbar Perform, best I can tell.

One of the gel flavors has Guarana.     This is a potentially dangerous herb.

The bars are weird flavors but probably the same nutrition as the Powerbar bars in the States?

So, be careful.       Especially with the Powerbar drink on the bike.  This is a lot different than what the USA folks have been exposed too.   And I would recommend staying away from the Powerbar gels with guarana.   Unless you want things like heart arrythmias.

  • Thx for the tip. Good thing that I'm pretty much indifferent to whatever is on the course, but will be taking all my own gels anyway. Sounds like I'll need to go 2 waters for each spiked drink on the course instead of my usual 1 for 1. I raced in Holland in 2008 and took all kinds of unknown stuff off the course with no ill effects. The only thing I'm hoping for is a typical cool German day. Heat would be in my favor, but I just hate warm drinks and most of Europe has either never heard of ice or act like its worth its weight in gold. My race in Holland ended up being during a heat wave and I near spewed out the warm piss they were serving at the finisher's tent. I had to go on a mission to find a cold drink afterwards.

BTW, how are we supposed to know which powerbar gels have "guarana".
  • Unless I lose my Infinit, I'm good for the bike.

Hopefully the European Powerbar run drink will be similar to American Powerbar Ironman Perform.

The gel flavor to be careful of:    Mango Passionfruit Guarana.

Maybe I'll bring some tea bags for the warm water on the course.

Any of you Europeans, please let us know what you know about the comparisons between the usa and european Powerbar products.

  • Keep in mind that you can race this course without having to rely on on-course nutrition too heavily.

-No special needs bags available, and outside assistance is the only option to receive special nutrition. So, your sherpa can arrange themselves through the course race to hand off your custom nutrition as you need it, and you'll be 100% Guarana-free.
-bike is 2 loops = High sherpa access.
-Run is 4 loops = Out-of-this world sherpa access.
-lots of wooded areas on run to stash a nutrition bottle or two behind a tree and pick up each run lap. (I actually hid an emergency pair of clunky runners in case my racing flats went sour during the run).

IOW, you could do the race quite easily using aid stations for water only.
  • Also, I didn't perceive any difference between EU Powerbar drinks and US powerbar drinks.

Except the orange EU stuff stained my white race jersey and arm coolers.

  • For the Regensburg racers, make sure to read the nutrition info in the FAQ.

The bike Powerbar drink is definitely different than what we have access to with the caffeine and amino acids.

Dave.  thanks. we probably won't have a sherpa but the stashing stuff is a good idea
