Retrocalceneal Bursitis

I know, it sounds gross, but it's kinda like having a blister inside my skin not on it. My right heel is inflamed but otherwise is totally fine. I have been icing and taking Advil, but nothing has really changed.  I am getting a general massage today and will see a PT on Monday....anyone ever have to deal with this? Would love some info. Here's something online: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002068/

  • Coach P - make sure to push for the ultrasound from PT. That is the least invasive treatment option. They may also be able to use Ionto (not sure on spelling) treatment. A small amount of steroid is place on a patch. One patch is placed on either side of the achillies A small current is sent through distributing the steroid to the affected area. I have had good results with treatment of achillies tendinitis.

However, if time is not on your side, I would get into see a sports medicine doctor. The injection may resolve the symptoms a little quicker.
  • Patrick...

I searched the forums for Retrocalceneal Bursitis because i also have a right tender bursa...its been there a couple of years.. Ive been holding it at bay with a heel lift and a heavier training shoe(gel Nimbus). The problem never goes completely away and some days are better than others. Its not a show stopper...but very annoying.

Im curious...after 11 months...have you had any luck with this? if so...what was the remedy?

  • Rob, the fix was a different pair of shoes with a proper heel cup. Turns out that my orthotics had raised my heel such that it was rubbing against the top of the heel cup...when I went to a beefier shoe with a proper heel I was fine!
