Banana 'Ice Cream'

All...

I discovered something this weekend that is quite amazing to me.  If you know about it, I'm not sure why you haven't posted it yet...

Like many of you I assume, I miss unhealthy foods that I force myself to stay away from during training.  Alot of these are in the sweet or dessert department.  Ok, I miss hamburgers too, but that is a story for another day.  So I present to you what is perhaps the most delicious, healthy, & simple thing I have ever eaten.

Grab some bananas that are ripe, whatever degree of ripeness you prefer.  Mine were perfect yellow, I don't like brown bananas.

Peel & cut up into 1/2" slices.  Put in freezer, let freeze.

Remove from freezer, put in blender.  Blend.

They start out as dry crumbles & give your blender a good workout.  You'll have to scrap the sides a few times.

After a short while you will have the smoothest fake ice cream you've ever seen in your life.

Feel free to add some vanilla almond milk or peanut butter if you desire, but it's damn good plain too.

It's as simple as it sounds & the taste is great.  The consistency is a bit more like icy ice cream once you re-freeze, but I think I've found a way to eat dessert!

Enjoy!

  • mmmmmmm, I'm gonna have to try this!
  • Nice! Last year, I also discovered the pleasure of frozen peach slices. So delicious.
  • This (with a bit of whole milk and PB) was my go to charge up drink/meal last year. I even had a portable blender up at LP to have it for race morning.
  • This is soooo two years ago. How we roll in the Strauss Haus:

    • Joanne buys massive amounts of fruit at Costco: strawberries, bananas, raspberries, blueberries, pineapple, mango, peaches, apples, etc
    • I do my best eat as much of it as I can.
    • Before it gets too ripe, I put it into gallon-size ziplock bags and freeze it so it's available for endless smoothies.

    A quick receipe is:

    • 1 cup vanilla almond milk (about 90 cals)
    • Frozen fruit(s) of your choice
    • I keep a pitcher of some flavor of Crystal Lite on hand -- lemonade, fruit punch, etc. Tastes pretty fake when you drink it straight, but I'll put it in a smoothie to add zero calorie volume and thin it out if too much frozen stuff above. And/or I'll peel an orange and toss it in.

Makes a blender size sorbetkindadealio that's maybe about 200-250cal, totally stuffs you...

  • @Ed,

to the banana mix add unsweetened baking cocoa and it makes for a yummy chocolate dessert!
  • Frozen watermelon made into a slushie is my favorite treat on a hot day!!

I just pop my frozen pieces into the the Magic Bullet and seconds later I have a tasty treat!!!
  • Frozen bananas changed my snacking life last year. My favorite combo is frozen banana slices, raw unsalted almond butter from trader joes, and a little honey. I am usually to lazy to deal with the blendtec so just in a bowl is fine.
  • Ed,

Great suggestion - weekend before last after a HOT 4 hour ride...

    2 frozen bananas (1/2" slices)
~ 1 cup Horizon Organic Chocolate milk (add more if too thick)
    2 Tbsp Peanut Butter
    1-2 Tbsp Honey

    Holy Moley that was good
