high heart rate but low Z in run, HIM
So in the Calgary 70.3 last weekend, I nailed the bike to the wall. 27 min PB, my Z3 target was 140W and I only got to Z2 121 - and my IF was .756. So I didn't overcook it.
However, I only took in one 20 oz bottle of gatorade (I usually take 2) bc I wasn't thirsty and I didn't want to stop to pee again.
On the run, my HR kept jumping into Z5 when I was running a Z2 pace. I guessed this was because I was dehydrated. Is this correct?
with thanks
Jane

Yes...you were dehydrated. In general, staying as hydrated as you can is a very, very good thing, not withstanding stopping to pee. I prefer to drink ~2 bottles per hour of water/sportsdrink, a little less if the temps are cooler, and if that means I gots to go all the time, so be it. The alternative (slowing down, massive cramping, etc) is much worse.
Jane - At IMCDA I drank too much and had to stop to pee way too many times, but I felt good the whole way. On the bike, I drank a bottle of H2O between each aid station plus had a 3x concentrated bottle of Infinit that I sipped 1/3 of per hour. Got another 3x bottle of Infinit at BSN. Temp on the bike was in the 50s at the start, warming up to the low 70s F by mid-day. I was drinking like it was the hot, humid Chicago summer. I stopped 8 times on the bike to pee, but my legs and gut were fine. On the run, I drank 2 cups of H2O at each aid station, grabbed a cup of ice to suck/chew on between aid stations and had more Infinit on my fuel belt. Took 1 Scap salt pill at start of run and another after 13 miles. Again, had to stop to pee way too many times (9 times). So while I was giving up some serious time stopping, I was well hydrated and able to run well. I was even able to speed up at the end of the race and my last 10k run split was my fastest 10k of the race by over 8 minutes. Result - I pass several hundred people in the last 6 miles. Overall on the run, I improved my AG placement from 41st at end of bike to16th at end of the run. Moral of story - if you are a good runner (and I recall from your Dec OS posts that you are) you want to be really well hydrated going into and during the run so you can maximize your run strength. So drink more, stop for a pee, and then run down all the people who didn't drink enough.
Hope this helps.

As for losing time peeing, I totally hear you. About 6-7 miles into the bike at Racine I felt like I had to go, but I didn't want to waste time so I held it as long as I could. Eventually I was so uncomfortable that I decided I'd rather lose the time then be miserable for the rest of the race. I considered not stopping but I also find the concept of pissing myself to be pretty unpleasant. When I stopped I hit the lap button to track the time cost. The pee break was 2:31 of averaging 9.3mph. So I probably lost a minute and a half. That sucks. But I felt so much better afterwards that it was worth it. I'm not sure how you can control the amount of urination you'll need to do, but I wouldn't trade control for sufficient hydration or comfort. And I'm not yet ready to pee "en route" (and probably will never be).
I was good with hydration going into and out of the swim (one trip to the port a loo and in my wetsuit- and that was needed it was so cold)
After the swim I peed en place in transition. Gallons. So I was well hydrated, but on reflection, I wonder if this is a DQ violation? I would expect it is. Warmed me up but it was gross.
I can't pee on a bike either. I think women's physiology is all wrong. Plus it's weird!
Any women able to pee while biking?
