EN Swowboarding/Skiing Weekend in SLC, Jan and/or Feb

Team:

I learned how to snowboard this year and, with the exception of about 4 very hard hits to my grape and possibly some bruised/maybe broken ribs...I thought it went very well!

I'm all about getting back on the slopes as soon as I can. Joanne and I are meeting my sister and her family for a week in Big Sky, Dec 20-26 and I'd like to make plans for Jan and Feb as well. We've bounced around a TeamEN weekend in the forums earlier this year:

  • Dates? I'm open for anything but assume that MLK weekend in January or PrezDay in Feb is best? Dunno, you peeps in the real world tell me.
  • Salt Lake City? Convenient to travel to and I understand the slopes are very close to the airport?
  • Anyone with condo/house/hotel hookups?

Who's in??!!

  • Sounds like a great idea. The ski areas around SLC are great. Keep in mind that Alta and Deer Valley don't allow snowboards. Snowbird is amazing. My usual ski trip probably won't happen this year because one of the guys is having kid number three around Jan. 1, and I doubt he'll be allowed to get away.
  • Hey Rich - Great to hear you are still thinking about this. A few thoughts. While MLK and PrezDay weekends are good for many because of days off, they are also huge weekends for the resorts and often flights can be challenging and lodging more of a challenge. Salt Lake area is very convenient to the airport. Park City is a fun town and could hit Park City, Canyons and then drive over to Snowbird (notice I'm not including Alta or Deer Valley since no boarding). Park City also has a nice deal that if you fly in during the morning, show them your boarding pass/ticket and you can ski the afternoon for free. A good deal for folks coming from the East Coast.

For me - I'd rather do a date in February, as I'll likely be in Deer Valley around MLK weekend with a bunch of college buddies. But definitely interested!
  • (This makes me feel like a geezer to say, but ) Back in '78-'80 I lived in SLC (the Avenues), and skied every day in Little Cottonwood Canyon. I had a saying, "The powder's deep, the slopes are steep, and the lifts are cheap."

It does snow a lot there, but January is often a bit sparse; the later in the season - Feb 12-March 31 - the better chance for some REAL snorkel days. Late Feb/Early March would be my vote.

  • As usual Al knows what he is talking about. Later in febuary to early march is better out there. Not that it is not usually great in January but it can actually get cold that time of year. Way too cold for people from so cal. If the dates work for me I will come for sure. Usually stay at the GMD in Alta but can be flexible as they do not dig the knuckle draggers as has been mentioned.
  • Ok, thanks for bumping the thread. Also, a local cycling friend/former coaching client is buying a vacation home in Park City so that might be another option
