My IMAZ pre-races/pre-training

Usually I have a HIM somewhere in the months leading up to a full IM, also a big bike or tri week.

This year, leading up to IMAZ, I have (so far):

-right now I'm in week 5 of the IM Adv 20-week plan. Trying to add more frequency to my runs and build up my long run volume due to the excessive TX heat (34 days in a row of 100+ temps).

-just hit the 'purchase' button on a trip to Al "The Oracle" Truscott's EN IMAZ Aspen Camp, arriving Thu 9/29, leaving Tue 10/4. Big miles, big altitude, little oxygen.

I'd usually consider:

-Sat 9/24: Redman HIM or Redman full-iron aquabike (add my own run on the end), as a race rehearsal

-Sat 9/24: Waco Wild ride (100 miles) with brick run, as a race rehearsal

-I have to work a tri on the morning of 9/25

-Sun 10/2: US Open Olympic distance Tri, but it's on the weekend of Aspen.

-Sun 10/23: Longhorn 70.3, too close to IMAZ

Only races I've had this year:

-Memorial Day, CapTex Olympic, Austin TX. Had a disappointing race

-this weekend, River Cities Sprint, Shreveport LA. I can't imagine getting a PR this weekend at this event

My previous IM experience:

IMFL06, IMAZ07, IMCDA 08, IMFL08, IMCDA09 (DNF)

My main goals for IMAZ:

-swim the whole thing, with minimal stops

-beat my time from previous IMAZ, 13:56:25. Heck, I'd love 12hours or less! I think I'm capable of it.

What do y'all think? Redman HIM or full aqua-bike (+my own run)? Anything else pre-IMAZ?

Comments

  • I would do the RedMan HIM to put it all together so your race hat is ready for IMAZ. Then chill it for a few days before going epic at altitude, etc!
  • Scott - FWIW, I'm doing a local HIM on Sept 24th. I think an HIM 8 weeks out from an IM is perfect timing, works as a Big Day.
