Low Hamstring Strain/Tendinitis?

About an hour into my 3 hour Saturay ride, I started feeling what I thought way some ITB tightness.  Nothing too bad, just made a note to roll it out real well after the brick run.  Later in the day, it started to feel more like it was in the bend of my knee, around to the outside of my knee a bit, like where your hamstring attaches.  The pain is more sharp than dull but not terrible.  Seem to feel more when I bend my leg to 90 degrees and beyond, not as much when i straighten it.

Other than icing it a ton (which I've done today), any suggestions on treatment and how long I should stand down?  I'm guessing ART or sports massage is probably the right place to start.  A Race is about 8 weeks away.

Thanks in advance.

  • Sounds like popliteus or gastroc at knee or a peroneal muscle at the lateral knee. This is my gut hunch. I am a PT with years of experience and tons more just treating my own crapimage. I tend to be spot on for my own personal hunger. Hope it will help you. If it were me I would get a good assessment from a sports PT or massage person. Let them dig it out.

Then look at cleats. Footwear( are shoes worn out).

Is ITB tight? Is calf tight? Get it all resolved. Should take no time to fix. Seriously. Dig it out, stretch. Fix cause.

    Good luck.

  • Carrie,

Thanks for the good advice.  Went and saw my ART guy yesterday and let him work me over . . . he was definitely doing some digging. After about 10 minutes, he concluded it was the popliteus . . . nice gut call by you!  Felt a lot better within a few hours, a little tender from the digging but I think I'm on the road to recovery.

Shoes/cleats are only a few months old and we're put in use as part of a Retul fit, but I'll double check all that stuff to make sure something hasn't moved around and contributing to the cause.

    Thanks again!
