Knee Injury

Last night, sitting on the floor legs out, I leaned over my right leg to fetch my cat and I turned a bit to the right so the outside of the knee was stressed and I heard a pop. I knew it wasn't good, so I took 800mg IB before bed even though all seemed well.

This morning did 50' on the trainer mostly at Z4, and knee felt only a bit stiff. I knew laterally, it was a bit sore. As the day wore on, with no IB, it gradually got stiffer. Now, with a Saturday tri-sprint, I am concerned about the stiffness. I can walk and the knee feels a bit unstable. I am doing the following:

1. Hot/Cold Therapy - currently icing and will take an epsom salt soak, then will ice it again. Plan to do this Thursday and Friday.

2. IB - took 400mg and will take another 400mg before bed. Will take a total of 1600mg tomorrow and then again Friday

3. Plan to swim a bit in the morning. Friday I am suppossed to do a 30' run @Z1 with a few sprints.

Question: what else should I be doing, or not doing?

Thanks, Joe

  • Joe,

any tender points? any swelling in the knee? can you bend it all the way (as much as the other side)

Ice better than hot. IB should and will help. you can go up to 600 every 6, or 800 every 8 (do you have any stomach/kidney problems?) total of 2400 daily.

unfortunately, mechanism is typically for a lateral meniscal tear. Let's wait and see what you feel like tomorrow, before we jump into ......

    keep us posted

  • Hasan - no tender points and no swelling. I can bend it as much as the other side. Feels stiff and I can hear a faint clicking sound when I bend my knee. No stomach or kidney problems.

So, 2400mg/day and ice seems to be the therapy. I plan to run @Z1 in the morning to see where I am since the injury.

Questions: am I missing something? What does this sound like, just a "sprain" and nothing to be overly concerned with?

    Thanks, Joe
  • the faint clicking, is it on the top part of your knee, just under the knee cap? if yes, this has been going on for a while.

If no swelling, no tenderness, and no givingway/locking/catching, then yes, probably just a sprain.

control the inflammation; and see where you go from there. you might need to stretch your IT, if that's tight.

how did the morning run go?
  • Hasan - first 15' it started off stiff and gradually loosed up. Then, I did some 60-90" sprints @ Z4 and it felt stable and did okay. Right now I'm taking some IB and will take my last IB tonight before bed.

So, the race is a go. I'll stay off it for a couple of days after and go back to the Ice and 2400mg/day therapy. If it is still an issue, I'll see a Doc. Does that sound about right?

    Thanks, Joe
  • @Joe - Any update on this? It seems similar to what I'm going through. Started on Monday image
  • I raced the sprint and didn't notice anything on the swim, bike, or run. But, here is where I am now - no lateral movement on the knee and I take 400mg IB before bed so it doesn't bother me during the night. I'm not icing it or doing anything special with hot or cold. Additionally,
    1. Swim - No breaststroke
    2. Bike - no problem
    3. Run - feels a little stiff and "loose". I watch it on turns and for heavens sake don't stress it sideways.

Getting out of the car or anything that introduces lateral movement doesn't feel good. So, I am taking it easy and thinking twice about doing anything and hoping it heals on its own.

I googled a lateral meniscus tear and I had only a few symptoms - so I think I dodged the bullet. How about you?
  • Still swollen. I did it while changing lanes in the swimming pool. Turned and pushed off the bottom of the pool, and the pain started. I had a PT friend look at it this morning and he thinks I bruised the meniscus. Ice and IBP help a lot! It also feels better with use. I'm a little freaked out as IMWI is less than 4 weeks away. We're also going to Madison tomorrow to swim and ride the course on Saturday. I haven't worked out since Monday. This is not fun.

Swim - I did notice while swimming that breastroke was not a good thing to do.
Bike - If I didn't have to bend my knee so much while biking, it would probably be fine, but my knee feels stiff when I'm at the top of the pedal stroke. I have not biked more then a few seconds since the injury.
Run - I swam in the morning monday, then ran before lunch. The more I ran, the better it felt.

I hope it's a lateral as I read it heals quicker, but I think it's medial since it doesn't hurt when I move laterally. I need to stop looking up stuff on the internet. It's scaring me more.
  • Yeah -I was getting some high anxiety the more I researched on-line. Hasan pointed out something I knew but had forgotten - 2400mg IB a day is maximum. Since this has been since Monday, I think you are past the swelling and the issue now may be to use some heat as well as ice to accelerate the healing process. Since tomorrow is Friday, you probably won't feel bad enough to not go to Madison on Saturday. I'd take lots of IB, stuff for ice wraps and epsom salts soaks and see how you feel.

Be sure to have a bail out plan on the bike. It's not worth it to push past the pain if you still have 4 more weeks to heal.
  • I've been taking 1200mg/day and no side effects. My knee is still visibly swollen. Not too bad, but enough that my kneecap is not as well defined as the other one.

My bail out plan is to swim and then go shopping while my SO rides the course image

Thanks for the help and encouragement!
  • Daniela, if u want to, gimme a call tomorrow sometime after 130 p ET; and we can things over. My cell is 312-752-8986
  • Hasan & Daniella - would sure like to track this one. If one of you could put something up for future reference, it would be great.

    Thanks, Joe

Thanks.  I called last friday and left a message.

I did the 2.4 mile swim, 70 miles of the bike, and a 6 mile run, and the knee was pretty good.  My PT friend played with it some more this week and it felt better.  That is until I ran on it yesterday.  It was pretty sore last night, then better this morning.  I did a 3hr bike, but skipped the run.  The back of my legs were REALLY tight and running did not feel good.  This was the first time I've felt that.  We'll see what tomorrow brings.

  • Daniela - tightness in back of knee is swelling from the knee area. Be there and done that. Maybe it's time to really back off on the run, ice it, IB it, and consider aqua-jogging. You are at two weeks out and I think the gains in fitness are minor compared to the gains in knee recovery at this point. Maybe it's time to bump this to RnP at the Micro level and ask for training guidance.
