EN Race Results Data Base

EN Race Results Data Base

A race results spread sheet has been constructed to capture race results and many elements covering your race. Elements include race segment times,  experience level, execution , fitness levels, bike gear, course weather conditions and mental aspects…….and many others.

This set of results can be a good reference for questions often posted in the forums – typical questions such as:

·       What bike gearing was used ?

·       What was water temps and swim conditions?

·       If I produce X watts and am Z w/kg , what is the range of bike times?

·       Do people run discs/wheel covers on this course?

·       ……

The sheet has been constructed to try to minimize typing and to ensure consistency in data. Drop down lists in many cells provide for consistent answers that will allow analysis of results later. The column headers have been color coded to tell you where you have to input data, select a drop down or do nothing – it will be calculated for you. The time needed to complete the reporting of all elements in the sheet, will be ~15-25 mins with a big chunk of that time spent finding the data elements from you race files.

Once we have a solid set of data, we can do some heavy data analysis and see what interesting correlations we have in the data set.

·       We may be able to define a body mass factor for the Temperature Impacted Race Pace Predictor (TIRP).

·       This data will help in the potential creation of an equivalent pacing application for the bike.

·       Gain added data comparing bike TSS numbers and run times. Potential improved guidance for bike times > 6 hrs.

·       What % of us execute nutrition to our plan?

·       What % of us maintain our metal MOJO thought out the race. When we lose it, what segment does this most often  occur (who is betting on the run)?

·       Impact on heat acclimatization on race performance.

·       A plot of w/kg vs. bike time for each course.

·       ……. many others

This data may also be able to help the coaches in their continued quest to improve the training plans.

There is one sheet for 140.6 races and one for 70.3 events. The sheets are Google docs and located here:

Each sheet has instructions on the first TAB, Please take the 2 minutes to read the instructions! This will make it easier for you to complete the sheets and also help prevent breaking the formulas in the sheets.

Please take the time to give back to your fellow EN team members by adding race results for at least on race. I am confidents that collectively we can get this data base up to over 1000 race results.   This will be a massive database that to my knowledge does not exist anywhere else. This data will be another added resource for all in the EN team. The more the better.

Your fellow team members thank you in advance!!

  • This will be awesome once populated. Great work Matt to drive this and all of the other analytics you have been pushing on. We have incredible insights waiting to be uncovered in this team's data. Let me know if I can help (other than entering my data, which I will do!). Cheers, Matt.
  • One thing I've wanted to do is to look at the average EN run time as a percentage of bike time, compared to the field as a whole. This tells us whether the pacing guidance really results in better runs that for everyone else.
  • @Matt EN has taught me how important race execution can be. One example is keeping your VI low on the bike. I think there are many other yet to be quantified edges to be gained. One is / was run pacing in heat. How may other opportunities are out there? Where else do you have 900+ people focused on the same objectives? The opportunity to collaborate on data to move us all forward is unprecedented in the triathlon space. In my view we are helping ourselves and our team mates by adding to this database. The team thanks you for contributing!!
  • @ Kieth - you see the power of this data   Yes I totaly agree - I have a beer on the answer !!!
