What do we know about IM France?

A friend of mine has signed up and I'm trying to talk her into joining our team.  I can talk all day about all the help we can bring to the table for the US races, but I don't see much on the International locations.  Anyone on the team done that race?  Looks like an insane bike course!

  • Mike Allen, of 2 x ToC fame, raced IMFrance this year.

  • I did the course as my first IM in 2005. Beautiful course! Swimming in the Mediterranean was easy enough, the water was very calm. The bike course was very tough and then the run course was pancake flat. Nice is a beautiful, fun city. I'd highly recommend staying after the race to enjoy the nightlife, restaurants and other things to do.

As to the bike course, it's very hilly with lots of steep twists and turns. Nothing better than I high FT to do well there image. EN hill guidance and knowing how to use a power meter effectively would have helped me a lot!
  • From Mike Allen, IIRC, get the lightest bike you can out there. Maybe even a road bike with some shorties slapped on it...and the run was hot!
  • Not sure what resources, team knowledge we have about IMF but you know that it will be much more than what she'd anywhere else, especially in free internet forums. Also, IMF is the same date as IMCDA so easy for her to birddog dog onto the IMCDA training and RR mojo leading up to the race.
  • Thanks for the feedback! I'm pretty sure her only bike is a road bike, so all set there. Trying to sell her on the power stuff we bring to the table and the knowledge to use it. As it would have it, there is a very large local contingency going to IMCDA, so the tie in to that is a good point Rich. I'll keep working on it. She's using a local coach who has yet to do an IM I'm told. Go figure!
  • It's a great destination race, the course is unspeakably beautiful, and it is a great staging area to see other neat stuff once the race is over and travel kicks in. By my recollection, the swim is a non-event, the bike is *very* challenging, and the run is flat, hot and 4 loops. As long as the racer manages their expectations for a race outcome, and thinks of things as "Unique Ironman experience" instead of a "PB" or "fast time," it could be a very enjoyable trip.

  • Thanks Dave, Its a destination deal for her absolutely. This is no2 for her. Cozumel was no1.
  • A good friend of mine did it this year... I can ask him if you have specific questions..
