  • of course the BIG problem.    this is not Speedplay !!!!

    I want Speedplay !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Look pedals are a different way of doing things.   The Speedplay spacers work for my leg length discrepancy and other issues.    Would be hard to get a Look pedal to work for me.

  • You can put wedges between the cleat and the shoe.

  • I'm a giant gadget nerd so I was familiar with the mapping on the 800 versus the 500, the less tangible aspects to me though are if you don't care about mapping so much, is the Edge 800 still worth it over the 500? My inclination is no, but on the 800 it does appear that you get a bigger screen and accordingly more data on that screen, which may matter more to me now with more metrics that I'd like to have the ability to keep an eye on.

The even less tangible aspects though are twofold. First, the 800 is Garmin's flagship device and accordingly, I expect it to see preferential treatment in terms of new feature rollout. As a 310 user, it was very disapointing to have to wait seemingly forever for rolldown of 3s and 30s power, to the point that I was tempted (as I suspect was their design) to just get a 500 already and not have to wait. Secondly, it's clear that from a hardware and software standpoint, the 800 is a more capable device, as it needs to be in order to do things like turn by turn navigation. That extra horsepower opens the door for more possibilities down the road, whereas the 500 has been out for what, 2 years now, and I would have to think is at least mid life in terms of it's upgrade cycle.

Even though I can get either at a healthy discount, something tells me the 500 is still the better buy for what I'd use it for... but the thought of not having the latest and greatest of anything electronic is almost sickening to me.

  • @Trevor - I completely agree with your assessment. Having both though, I find that I use the 500 more often as it is smaller and leaves more room for my hands and bottle on the aerobars. Also, some days the touch screen on the 800 is great, other days, like during a dwonpour and hail storm, the touch screen doesn't work quite as good. The key buttons are still 100% functional though.
  • I've used the 500 since it came out and it's a damn fine bike computer. The 800 might be on my Christmas list this year though.
  • This stuff keeps getting more vapor'y (is that a word?)...

  • I threw in the towell last month and now have a Powertap G3. Time to shout out once again -- say it with me -- COACH RICH WAS RIGHT!
  • Confirms Garmin as a company which does NOT put out crap, or, if it does, recognizes its mistake.

I'm still waiting for the "new" CompuTrainer software, which I figure should take them finally into the 21st century - 12 years too late!

However, my Garmin 305 Forerunner from 2006 and my CT from 2007 are both still rolling along. But then so is my Quintana Roo TT bike from 2000. Sometimes, you don't need the latest thing.

  • Still anxiously waiting for the latest 500 firmware update that has NP, IF, TSS, etc. metrics. That was supposed to come out last month, I think. image
  • last year i was waiting for a vector, then i found a used Quarq that was only a few months old - so happy that i bought it. Not only did i get a great power meter, it also had 165mm cranks which i really like. Like Anson, i am waiting for the NP/IF/TSS metrics for the Edge 500 and 910xt - apart from that i am all set.

My Calfee road bike turns 10 years old this fall (sniff). Still running the original Ultregra brakes but the rest of the bike is Red. I have this annoying creaking in the headset/forks that I only think to fix when I stand up in the saddle a few blocks from home. Otherwise, I've had my eye on a friend's S3 for a while. I keep telling him the bike is too small for him and he needs to give it to me

  • A bit of news from DC Rainmaker's blog:

"I was able to get a bit more info regarding a few aspects.  The first is that this delay does not impact the long-promised Edge 500 TSS/NP/IF update (similar to the previously released Edge 800 update).  The latest date has the Edge 500 update occurring soon, well within the ‘spring’ timeframe.  Though, given the history here, I’ll believe it when I see it.  Similarly, the previously promised FR910XT update is also forthcoming for TSS/NP/IF, and the two device updates should be delivered at nearly the same time.  The teams working on the Edge/Forerunner firmware updates are not the same teams as Vector, and thus there’s no impact to their work streams."

    Ahh, the anticipation..

When your buddy gives you that S3, I'd be happy to give the Calfee a good home!
