IMWI Kona Slots Error in Athlete Guid

I just noticed that the website says 65 slots, but the Athlete guide says 50... I've emailed WTC to confirm which is correct.

From ironmanwisconsin.com FAQ:

How many slots to the Ford Ironman World Championship?

There will be 65 qualifying Age Group slots to the Ford Ironman World Championship on offer at the 2011 Ford Ironman Wisconsin. For more information, please log onto www.ironmanworldchampionship.com.

*2011 Ford Ironman Wisconsin is a qualifier for the 2012 Ironman World Championship

From Athlete Guide:

Ffity (50) age-group qualifying slots for the 2012 Ironman World Championship (October 13,

2012, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii) will be awarded to the top age group finishers.

  • Please post the response. Off to check the gabbing on ST on this item.
  • My hope is it was an error as WTC is know to just copy and paste the Athlete guides... we'll see how long until they respond to me.
  • I hope it's an error also. There is a possibility that it's 50 since this is the first qualifier for next year's Kona.

  • Whatever happens on this issue, I think WTC should award you a Kona spot for your loyalty.
  • Got the email response... it's 50 slots now, the FAQ on the webstie was a mistake and they are sorry for the confussion...

"Thank you for your email and support of Ironman. The FAQ page was using the 2010 information as a reference and was updated when the new Athlete Guide was released, I am terribly sorry about the confusion! Please let me know if you have any additional questions!"
  • IMNYC and IMMel each got 75 slots. That's largely where they went. Times they are a changin'.
  • piiiiiiissssssseeeeddddd. off.
  • Dave, I don't blame you a bit. I read Raymond Britt's books on Wisconsin and Kona. They are completely obselete. His KQ times from just a few years ago are not even close.
  • @Dave - I shared my thoughts with WTC. I basically said what they do with the slots is up to them as they have to run a business. But I am upset that they continue to take our money a year out and then announce rule changes and race date changes after we have already paid for multiple of their races... then they will only give you a $150 refund (less then 25% back) and the other races are already full. I suggested that all changes be communicated 18 months in advance when possible and at a bare minimum never less than 12 months when events are opened for registration. I have not recieved a response yet.

I'm caught in a catch 22 as I really want to do Kona again and do Vegas, but I really don't want to keep giving WTC money.

I really don't want to keep giving WTC money.

I keep hearing, or reading, this sentiment more and more.  You're right that they're a company and it's up to them on how they run thier business.  However, WE are the consumer and it's up to us on how we spend our money.  They are no longer the only show in town and will start to pay attention when WE start voting with our checkbooks.  I'm sure no other race has the glamour or bragging rights of Kona but there has to be a better way.

  • Just saw this on ST:

"Kelly Bornemann, Aug-29 08:24 am (CDT):
    Nick,
Thank you for your e-mail and I apologize for the confusion. I am unaware of the Wisconsin website mentioning 65 slots, but if that's the case it would be because the website was reflecting the information in regards to the 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship. Due to the confusion, we will be offering 65 slots to the 2012 Ironman World Championship at the 2011 Ford Ironman Wisconsin. Again, I apologize for the confusion, please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

My take on that is that they are now once again offering 65 slots...

I have an email from the last week saying it was only 50 and the website would be changed to 50... but maybe enough people complained.
  • If that is correct, it would fit in with WTC's recent habit of doing something really stupid and annoying and then more or less making good on it after enough noise/complaint. I have forgotten the list, but it includes the "Rich guys go to the front of the line club" that got canned.
  • Is is correct that there were 72 slots last year, including 7 slots for pros and this year there were to be 65 and then 50 slots, now not including pros, who have their own points system? (A loss of 15 slots for age groupers.)
  • Brian, you are correct....except that they have now reversed themselves, and it's back up to 65.

  • Does anyone know what the number of slots were for IMWI 2009? I think my age group had 3 slots in 2009 and 2 in 2010, which could be due to fluctuation in number of people in the age group. Being a women sucks for allocation image We have a teeny tiny pointy end. I think 3rd is even a way long shot for me, but still curious.
