flexor hallucis longus tendonittis

Just been diagnosed with tendonitis in my right foot.  Can not run at all right now as it hurts way too much.  Rest, ice, Aleve so far.  Anyone have stretching/strenthing advice to share?

  • Don't get over zealous with anything, just leave it alone. Ice and motrin should be enough if you allow it time to get better. Spend you time figuring out what caused it and focus more on prevention. Possible your running form is mechanically weak. Athletes tend to sometimes increase their stride length in an effort to increase their speed. Not only does this advocate heel striking but it causes "flexor hallucis longus tendonittis (FHL)". Stop wearing "flip-flops," they just encourage pulling your toe up and again reinforce poor muscle memory.

My wife who, is physical therapist, asks do you have flat feet (pes planus)? Flat feet often causes you to over pronate or rotate your foot inward causing your FHL to work to stabilize your foot. If so allow it to rest then look at maybe performing "towel crunches" to strengthen the muscle. Look at new shoes and potentially orthotics. 1st consider looking at your running form again after proper rest.
