mebourne spot?

2012 may be the last ironman year.   The plan to try to qualify.     Signed up for Idaho and Quebec.    The St. George and Regensburg combo worked really well this year.

In the last couple weeks, was thinking of trying New Zealand or Melbourne in 2012.    Both in March.    I thought Endurance Travel still had New Zealand slots but not so.    Melbourne sold out right away recently.

Does anyone know if any travel company has Melbourne spots?    Endurance Travel does not best I can tell.   And no foundation spots?

  • Robin - for Melbourne you could try www.tritravel.com.au though think they just have travel packages not slots as well, could be worth an ask though?
  • The foundation is a US thing, I think.

What about South Africa (April) or Brazil (May)? Melbourne is likely to be as tough to qualify at as Germany, Brazil and SA seem a little more mellow.

  • 3 IM's eh?? You might scratch Melbourne if you can't find a slot and consider St Croix 70.3. They will have 32 slots for Kona. It's 7 weeks before IMCDA...much better option from a recovery perspective than doing Brazil 3 or 4 wks earlier. It's definitely on my radar for next year's run up.

    Thanks all. Good options.

So my primary race for 2012 will be Idaho in June.

Back up and family race will be Quebec in August.    Will do this regardless, but in case I’m sick for Idaho or have a mechanical, I have another shot.

I was able to find a Melbourne spot through the travel company (thanks for the find).   This is in March which gives three months to Idaho. Gives me three full months of recovery.   I had a good Regensburg race three months after St. George this year.           Downsides are training during the winter indoors, the travel, and I guess the probable faster qualifying times.     Though lots of Kona slots

South Africa and Brazil too close to my primary race, I think.

I like the St. Croix 70.3 option.    Other than the travel.      This in May gives 1.5 months to Idaho.      So if I do the half iron training plan and do two weeks of recovery, does that still give me one ironman race simulation before Idaho?

    -----------------------------------

Do Melbourne?       Downsides of winter training, etc.

Just concentrate on Idaho and if needed, Quebec?

Add St. Croix?     Half iron training plan. Two weeks recovery.   Then pick up ironman plan for Idaho.
  • Rpbin - if you can race Melbourne, I think that's a better option than St Croix, especially since you've had good experience on the double. However, 3 IMs will make for a long season (but I shouldn't talk because my 2012 season may be a doozy). If you are game, the answer partly depends on the weather and elevation at Melbourne...are there any similarities to IMCDA? St Croix is arguable the toughest 70.3 on the circuit...hot, humid, hilly, windy + a non wetsuit swim with a current. See the following for a comprehensive course review: http://www.bikesportmichigan.com/features/stcroix.shtml . You could take a full week recovery, then 3 weeks of IM training with RR on 2 May, then 3 weeks more till IMCDA. By the way, American Airlines has had a lock on flying into St Croix, but Jet Blue is starting service this Dec although they will stop in San Juan en route. Speaking of San Juan, that 70.3 really cut into St Croix entries. They were down 15% in 2011. So the slot per starter ratio at St Croix is probably the best anywhere, and if you don't KQ then you still have a good chance at Vegas...although that might interfere with your back-up plan.
