Can We Bitch Smack the Ironman Foundation Placid Relief Efforts?

The disaster in the LP region has been quite shocking; the pictures tell the full story. Ironman has "stepped up" by offering $5,000 to help with relief and asking athletes to contribute to the Ironman fundraising efforts. While I applaud them for moving quickly, I think they are missing some zeros there. Seriously. I have almost personally paid IM $5k to race in LP over the last decade...knowing they take home several million a year there really gets me fired up. So...

I want to give, but not via IM. Instead I want to raise some $$ and awareness and then challenge them to step up and match the funds that we, the athletes, have managed to raise.

Anyone on the Team interested???

  • I'll send some dough... Where do you want me to send it? Did you set up some type of donor account or do you want to do it directly through EN? Either way is fine with me, whatever you think is best...
  • I like this idea, Patrick. Let's challenge WTC to step it up and show Placid some love.
  • I'm in! Would rather the donation come through EN than WTC. Love LP, but not so in love with WTC
  • I'm in too P. I saw that email from WTC and thought, really 5K is all they are sending? Would be glad to help.
  • Coach P,

I too would be willing to contribute some funds.

  • Thought the same thing P. At first I thought it was a typo.

    Count me in
  •  Great thread title! I was shocked by the cheapness of the WTC....basically $2 per athlete out of their $600 or so entry fee.

Whatever the group decides to go with $5, 10, 20, 50 per member, Jane and I are in. The communities of LP, Keene and Jay are incredibly supportive. Let's give back to them.

  • Thanks folks! I am working to find a local charity to make sure that we can give money someplace where it will have a truly local effect. Stay tuned!
  • Count me in.... My friend who has a house on the run course on River Rd had 9 ft of water on his first floor and had heavy wooden chairs float off his second floor deck....Took him hours just to get to his place it's so messed up....image
  • Abso-Freakin-Lutely!!!!! Count me in. Your comments & thoughts absolutely mirrored mine. We've got our own set of problems and issues for me to donate time & money to where I live, but I did want to give back to the community that hosts the IM event. However, I felt "icky" donating through WTC only to put another feather in their cap when they are themselves donating an amount that seems so small. So count me in!
  • Folks, it's game on! I found a great local group that manages funds to area nonprofits and businesses for Keene and Jay.  I have made it a challenge event. I am hoping that across the interwebs we can get 140 folks who have raced in Lake Placid to each raise $500....the average Ironman entry fee...by Sunday 9/18.

You can read all about the challenge here. If you just want to give you can do that too, but if you have raced/trained in the region I am going to ask you to do a bit more. image

The goal is to get 140 peeps to raise $500 each for a total of $70,000....and then challenge the Ironman Foundation to match our efforts.

I have donated $100 and know that EN (once I talk to Rich!) will give more as well...

Thanks again for your response and please help us spread the word!

  • Coach P--
Did you set up your own First Giving page or is there an EN First Giving page if we just want to donate to the cause without making our own page? If so, can you post that link here?
  • John the link to the EN First Giving page is here: http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/patrick-mccrann/acthurricanerelief

Of couse, I prefer you to create your own page to challenge your network, but no pressure. If you want to do the challenge thing, you can go here: http://triathletesforlakeplacid.wordpress.com/
  • I am unable to participate this weekend and make the deadline, so I sent a contribution instead.

When I saw the paultry $5K WTC donated, I was disgusted.  For all the money they have made on this race, they should be ashamed!  If they donated $10 per entry they receive (estimating 3000 entries), that is a $30K donation.  If you average out their donation per participant it equals $1.67.  Seriously??!!

Thank you for setting this program up and taking the initiative to do the right thing.

  • My webpage is up and running. Here's a link http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/davecampbell/triathletesforlakeplacid I kicked it off with $100. Lets go team!!
