Head Cold - Racing IMWI in 8 Days

So, I'm 8 days out from IMWI.  My wife just came down with a bad head cold...so it's like a time bomb.  I'm almost certainly going to get it, in fact I probably already do and just don't have symptoms yet.  Any ideas on how to ease the symptoms during the race?

  • The docs will probably have the best answer, but I was in office full of people getting the flu last year and my smart chiro had me taking a really good Vitamin C supplement and another one, called Adreset. All healthy on race day.

  • I personally would not take anything to ease the symptoms during the race. I've trained with many a head cold and have been fine. You will be a snot machine. So what? You don't want it going below the neck though.

What Beth said. Take a lot of vitamin C. You've got a week also. Even if you cacth it, you've got time for it to pass.

  • Either Emergen-C or Airbourne work as my Vitamin C blast. Pick either up anywhere, its a huge blast of vitamin C. Try to rest as much as you can this week while taking in the vitamins, and you should be good in a week.
  • ZMA as a supplement at bed time, push the fluids, WASH THE HANDS. Its airborne remember......
  • Emergen-C x3 a day and you will be a friggin' cold-fighting machine - start now no biggie.

Nothing special on race day, other than a rearview for your multiple nose blowing sessions.

  • Avoid products with guaifenesin. This is a common expectorant they may cause dehydration while you’re racing. If you can avoid anything try to. If you’re having a lot of congestion, sinus pressure, and your nose is a faucet take ½ dose over the counter sudfed. This will be one small red pill usually 30 mg. Avoid the 12-hour stuff those doses are too high and may increase your heart rate, palpitation, anxiety, nervousness. You’ll be fine if you take a smaller dose. Take one if you can’t breathe and need to sleep. It might help to take when you wake-up at night and you’re planning on eating some extra calories (naked juice, apple sauce, whatever your plan is). This will give you just enough time to get in and out of the water and breathe. Then “suck it up.” If you have a fever take Tylenol 325mg: 2 tablet every 4-6 hours. This is metabolized in your liver and shouldn’t cause any problems. If you have been experiencing a fever you’re going to have to increase your hydration needs. This will also affect you nutrition plan. Motrin 800 mg: 1 tab every 8 hours tomorrow but NOT during the race. Motrin is broken down in you kidneys and cause result in decrease kidney function or failure while IM racing. Good luck. Race with discipline and you’ll do great and likely race better because of it. Any more questions I’ll be watching the thread.
