What I saw at lunch...2012 PowerTap
I was at my LBS at lunch, and the Saris/CycleOps rep just happened to be at the store talking to the manager. Well, the manager points me out as being one of his loyal long-standing customers (been shopping there for 6+ years) and that I have a power meter from another company (Quarq) on my tri bike.
The rep asks me if I want to see "my next power meter" (sales pitch). I follow him to his little suitcase of tricks, where he shows me what looks like a standard powertap wheel. He takes out a small wrench-like tool, twists one side off at the axle, and pulls out a donut-looking thing.
Turns out, on the next gen PT, that's all you'll have to send in to them to get the electronics fixed. Or if the LBS has enough inventory, within a year of purchase, they'll exchange it over the counter for you - and voila, you're fixed. Screw the cover back on, and you can even keep riding your wheel - even if the electronic 'donut' is not in there and being shipped off.
Seemed very easy and convenient that way, but personally, I still like to use my own various wheels, which is why I went with the Quarq to begin with.
Just thought I'd let you all know what's coming to a LBS near you - and to WheelBuilder too!!

For the majority of folks, the PT continues to look like the most cost effective solution.
Don't hold your breath.
@Scott - Its called a G3 and due out to the masses next month. It's smaller than the current PT hubs and 100 grams lighter than the current PT's (~425 grams vs. ~325 grams). The G3 cap dealio looks very smart.
I'm friends with a local in Madison(pro mechanic/fitter) that has high conections with Saris, the G3 was supposed to be out at the end of August but they were fine tuning some welding that they weren't happy with yet. All story shrot, my cross wheels have the SL+ instead of the new G3. I was so hoping to be a beta tester in the mud but I couldn't want much longer for my wheels.
Hayes, me too. Couldn't wait. Got the SL+ (Black) on my new 404 Firecrests last month.
I did, however, have a concern being an early adopter of the G3.
