Finish season with PT or wait to OS

Hi all I just ordered a PT Pro with a Garmin 500 that should be in this week. I Have a HIM on Oct 1 that will be my first RR/ B Race for my season finale and HIM on Nov 13. My question is should I switch to the PM to finish the season or just finish  using HR and switch to the PM in the OS?

My thougths are to wait and get comfortable using the PM in the OS so that it will be more of a tool than a novelity but having no experience using the PM I would love to hear from y'all. Thanks for any and all input.

  • I'd use the PM / Garmin as a data collector even if you don't know what it means till later. Put it on, race with HR, figure it out later. Just make sure the Garmin is collecting HR Power and Cadence when you first set it up.
  • Dewey,

I'd agree with Steve.  Hook it up collect the data but race with HR as per normal.  With less than two weeks to the first 1/2 you don't really want to be getting in an FTP test.  You also don't want to be distracted by the PM numbers during the race.

  • Since Oct. 1st is a B race, I'll assume that you won't quiet be doing a full taper for it. I'd do your regular rides with the PT this week, so you can get a general idea of where you stand and maybe try an FTP test some point next week to see if you can get an approximate FTP. I would then race using your HR, but having the PT on to accumulate data. Following your Oct 1st race, you will then have 2 significant data points (an FTP test and HIM race data), which you should then post to the forum. We will help you figure out an approximate starting point to continue your next 4 weeks of power training. You can then dial in your power numbers for your final HIM in mid-Nov.

Congrats on the PT and welcome to your new definition of work and how to ride consistent effort!!!
  • Steve, Gordon, and Keith Thanks for the quick responses. Using HR but riding with the PM for the next 2-3 weeks makes sense to me after reading you posts. Keith I also like the prospect of finishing the season and doing my final race with power. Overall was a little concerned that I would not have time to get a good understanding of the PM and the numbers but sounds like I can get some help and get started on redefining work and improving my overall bike and run. Thanks again for the input.
  •  What Steve, Gordon and Keith said.  Put it on and start using it!

Your whole training life is gonna change.  Welcome to the club.
