CDA 2012 -who's in

I know the 2011 season isn't done but I'm curious who's registered for CDA next year.

More importantly, I wonder if anyone is interested in trying to get a training weekend put together (perhaps to line up with our first RR - but if not, no big deal).  I have to say that having the exposure to the IMWI course helped me so much - I'd love to have an epic training weekend in late May or early June to get the same exposure and build some comfort and confidence before the race.

If not, anyone know if there's a good bike video of the CDA course (haven't checked spinnervals, I know they have one for IMWI).

  • Becky,

I did a quick google search and it seems there are several YouTube videos for the CDA bike course...
  • Hey Becky,

I'll be competing in IM CDA 2012. I put together the 2012 group this past weekend, so please join us if you haven't already. I'm starting outseason at the beginning of October. You are welcome to come to Austin and ride the hills here if that sounds interesting.

I'm not sure about DVDs, but there is definitely a computrainer real course video (for use with a computrainer trainer). Heck... you can ride mine if you come out for a training session. Its a really beautiful course if you haven't seen it before.

Good luck with your training. I look forward to meeting you.

    Thanks,
    Alan
  • I'm in - don't know about a video. Would love it if there was a course talk like for the US IM's. Maybe we can get a couple of the folks that have done the race multiple times to do a podcast for us that have never even seen Penticton before.
  • thanks for the responses (will join the group now). I'm not sure when I'm going to start OS - just finished IMWI and need some time to rehab my foot and work with a PT. I filled out a survey and hope the coaches will weigh in on what they think.
I'll see what I can do about getting a trip planned for an RR weekend or something - I have heard how gorgeous is it and am looking forward to that (not the freezing cold swim, though).
  • Bill WIseman and I are in but too far away to do the RR on course. We both did it in 2007 and my questuion is, does anyone know if  the bike course is changing? I heard the run course is different from 2007.

PS: Bob, IMCDA= Idaho and IMC = Canada.

  • Did CDA this year. The run course certainly did change Jeff. There is no longer the flat out and back out of transition. You head right up the hill out of town and out to Lake CDA drive. Instead of turning 13-1/2 up the hill you go up and over it about 1/2-3/4 miles then flip it and come back up the hill. From what I heard it made the run much harder than in years previous.
Also, heard the rumor that the bike course could change. But that has been rumored for a long time from what I hear.
@Becky, that's awfully far for an epic weekend, and not very convenient. You're looking at flying into Denver then Spokane then an hour drive into CDA. Having said that, last year a group of guys did in fact meet up for RR #1 on the course, but they were all fairly local.
  • I'm planning an epic training week in Vegas around that time. Planning RR #1 + extra training. Terrain is very similar, lake temps will be good for wetsuit OW practice (and it's the best lake I've ever swam in), and endless places to run. May 6th there is a bike race on a perfect course (compared to CdA), fully supported, with a max distance of 130 miles so plenty of distance. I'm thinking about using that as my RR, even though I think it's at the end of week 5 instead of 6.
  • It looks like the bike course will change for 2012. The new course will involve racing on a pretty major highway which will be at least partially closed on race day but difficult and scary to train on. However, the old course, at least in my mind, still lends itself to a weekend training get together.

The people in the Hayden Lake area are raising a bit of a ruckus to get the bike course changed. They don't have a problem on race day but seem to be getting a bit touchy concerning the IM bike parade of 2, 3, 4+ riders across on their roads every weekend for the months leading up to IM CDA. As a local who rides the course a number of times each year with our local tri club IM CDA athletes, I suspect that even with a new course, things will not change much. We will still most likely be out there training on the old course. I have never experienced any issues with anyone while training. The roads are lightly traveled and cars always give us plenty of room. Perhaps it is you foreigners who are causing all the problems image.

The other concern/rumor that is floating around is that 2012 is apparently the last year of the current contract, and IM CDA may not be renewed for future years. That, in my mind, would be a major loss for the local community as well as IM athletes. It truly is a magnificent location for a major race. I hope it remains merely a rumor.
  • @Jeff - need to pay more attention - guess I'm already thinking too much about a race almost a year away - but I really would like a course talk for IMC
  • I am also in and like Jeff and Georgre not likely to come from SC for a RR.

  • Al- that's such a bummer. I had heard the rumors of the course change and really hoped it wouldn't go that way since once of the reasons I'm doing IMCDA is because I heard it was so beautiful. Rats!!!

Unlikely that I'd make a trip out for a RR or course recon. Vacation time & money will just be too tight.
  • Nemo, the course is still scenic and magnificent. The change just makes it difficult to train on portions of the exact course prior to IM day. If you are coming from out of town with no RR plans or training rides on the entire course prior to race day it should be pretty much of a non issue.

If you are wanting the ride the course prior, you just may need to plan for at least a portion of the ride to be on an alternate route. You should still, however, get a good overall feel for what you will face in June 2012.
  • Cool, thanks Al. Now can you do something about installing heaters in the lake?
  •

    Wife and I signed up.

My first ironman in 2009 was Idaho.    Now four ironmans later, ready for a pointy end attempt.

So I get to experience the slightly different run course.

Why starting OS beginning of October?      Starting October 31 myself.   20 weeks OS.   2 weeks transition.   12 weeks iron plan.

Yes will do big bike weekends in Idaho.

Maybe week 4 and/or 8 of the 12 week iron plan.   The course each day for two days.   Or total of 1.5 bike course per weekend.

Maybe one or both race simulations, of the 12 week plan, in Idaho.

Maybe one weekend in the last half of the OS.

    Computrainer has Idaho course.

Being my first ironman, the course is a blur in memory.   So can’t help much there.

Interesting about the new bike course.   And possible last year in 2012.

See you all there.    Maybe before race day too.

Is the bike course easy enough to ride with a map for old and/or new courses?      Are the courses permanently marked on the roads?

  • Robin, the 2011 course if fairly permanently marked, although the markings tend to fade and disappear over time. However, printing off and following the map via the IM CDA website works great and is easy to follow.
  • My husband and I are in for '12 as well. (Robin, looking forward to meeting with you and Lisa again!) I am fairly close from there, so interested in any pre-race rides. I was going to start OS in Oct. after I come back from Kona (to cheer on my lottery winner husband and all other ENers), but sounds like Nov. start will fall in just fine with the race timing...
  • Al.   Thanks for the info.       Do we know when the new course might for reflected at the website?

Yasko and all.     Yes should be fun.

I might try to get out there in the middle of March if there is a good day.

Otherwise hopefully once to twice in weeks 3 or 4 or 6 or 8 or 9 of the 12 week iron plan.
