Sciatica

I recently unexplicable ended up with a bad case of sciatica. It is likely going to derail my run at the Twin Cities marathoin oin two weeks but I can live with that as longas I can find out a way to deal with the issue going forward. I wen to the doctor and was put on steroids. That seemed to help a lot for the inflammation but I still seem to have some lingering pain on my hip. I have now started a regular stretchng routine as well. My traineer says my hamstrings are as tight as a drum but my hip flexors are good. My wife says to see a chiropractor but i have always been lery that they are not really helpful. Does anyone have any insight as to whether at this point it would be worthwhile to see a chiropractor or not. Any other thoughts appreciated.

  • A chiropractor may help provide some immediate relief but will not provide any longer term benefit. A good chiropractor should not do any manual manipulation until you get an MRI either. Your trainer or a physical therapist is going to be the biggest help. An additional stretch that tends to help decompress the nerve root and encourage the disc to return to where they belong is to simply lie on your stomach and put a few pillows beneath your torso to arch or lower back.
