I got a brick at Savageman, and Dave Scott didn't!

Check out the video at 2:15 on www.youtube.com/watch

The Man still finished 6th overall with 2nd overall on the swim and a 1:34 run off the bike at age 57.

I got my brick last year and didn't have the time this year, but can't wait to get back next year.  Maybe a huge EN group at Savageman to counter Rich's plans for Wildflower on the west coast?

  • I saw that earlier today! Bev Richardson and Melanie Zinger (former ENer) were both there this year and I believe got bricks too. This is on my wish list for sure. I don't know how the hell I'd train for it, but I just want to do it!
  • Is it just me or did it look like people were spiking their watts and their heart rate...like off the chart! It's on my to-do list for 2013 or 2014 (I plan ahead). Looks like most folks are getting it done with a tri-bike...would a road bike be better? How much further is the route if you choose to bypass the climb? I thought if you "got a brick" it went into the street, but from the looks of the steep part, it was last paved in 1892!
  • Paul, that's the point!  There's no way to do this race "EN Style" with flat power output and low VI.

I did the race last year with an FTP of about 235.

My average power during the race was 157 with an NP of 195 and a VI of 1.24.  This gave me a time of 3:45 on the bike, which is 55 minutes slower than another HIM I did with about the same fitness.

My peak power for 20 seconds (which was on the Wall) was 594 watts with cadence of 68 and speed of 6.2 mph.  Peak HR was 175.   And this was with 34x27 or 28 gearing.  That's not the hard part.  The first mile after the Wall has an average grade of 13%.

I used a road bike, and would do the same again.  The Wall was closed to traffic years ago because it's too steep, and hasn't been repaved since.  The bricks are in a small section near the top on the left side.  There's no plan to entirely repave the road with bricks.

In the early years, you were allowed to circle the block and bypass the Wall, but that's no longer allowed.

  • Thanks Keith...definitely looks brutal! Starting in 2013 with the Pikes Peak Ascent, I will be looking only for BRUTAL courses with steep hills and cold water. Savageman and St George are also on the list...part of the plan to prepare for Norseman in 2015.
  • Thanks for the list of to do tough races.
