Post IM: Severe Hamstring Soreness

I recently competed in IM Canada (my first IM) on August 28.  I fully expected to be sore for a week or so, but its now 3 weeks out and my hamstrings/upper calves are still about as sore as they were five days after the event.  I've done some yoga, had a massage, done some light spins on the indoor trainer, lots of ice, etc., but I just cant seem to see any improvement.  I tried a "light" run on Monday and the legs/hips protested severely.

After asking a few local IM vets, it seems that 3 weeks of prolonged, acute soreness is not typical.  Im starting to get a little concerned.   Any insight/advice on how to manage this situation would be greatly appreciated.

  • Sounds like you gave yourself Rhabdomylysis (sp?). Stop with the physical activity and go see dr. For lab: ua, CBC, cmp, LFTs and cpk. Traveling so limited availability to field questions. Check for more later. Google diagnosis: Rhabdo
  • @Jamison: I contacted the family physician and he said "pretty much 0% chance of Rhabdo this far out." But Im going to go in for some bloodwork to rule out anything serious.

  •  I agree, definitely not rhabdo.  This sounds like a muscle (hamstring) strain or pull.  I'm dealing with the same issue right now except mine seems to have popped up out of the blue after a hard bike ride recently.  Probably pushed it to much in the mountains when hamstrings were not ready for the abuse.

     

    Hamstring strain is a BIG topic with many causes and differing ways to treat.  I've read some folks suggest to keep running, but much slower than normal.  Others say run every other day.  And then there are sources that suggest NO running.  Same with treatment....stretch before and after, make sure you are adequately warmed up before your run, ice, rest, elevation, compression,  cross train (ie, swim or bike), NSAIDS (ie, ibuprofen), etc.......Currently, I am trying HEAT.  I've not read this as a recommendation but it does make the hamstring are feel more loose and not so tight.  I'll let you know if it makes a difference when I try to run later today
