Arghhhh Allergies, Sinus Crud, and Long Run

Hey all you WSM's,

So I am in week 15 of IMFL training, and have caught a cold, or Allergies are flaring up? Not sure which, but this normally happens at least twice a year, and usually, knock on wood, turns into a Sinus infection, sometimes bronchitus. I did RR#1 last Sat in pouring rain, and then had sunday off, felt worse on Monday, and decided to stand down on prescribed workouts. Did Mondays WO's on Tuesday, and started to get that lovely mild sore throat, and stuffiness. Woke up on Wed, and had full on sore throat, congestion, headache etc....

So..... I bagged the wed bike, and brick run, hoping rest and lots of fluids would get me through thursday long run. Feel a bit better today, but have a lot of Sinus pressure, nasal drip, congestion etc...

Should I attempt my 2.5 hr Long Run this evening? I also have a OLY on Saturday, and plan to do more z3 afterwards to make up the the hours for that workout. I am sorry for the long explanation, but I don't want to make a foolish decision, and tank my training for the next week or longer??

Any advice from someone who has been there and done that would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

  • Scott,

I will only comment on treating your symptoms and hopefully minimizing the duration. There are a couple things you can take that should provide some fairly quick relief. Use 2 sprays of Afrin (or generic equivalent) in each nostril twice a day for 3 days. This should help with the congestion. using it longer than 3-4 days can create rebound congestion and only complicate the problem. For the runny nose, try some claritin. The box lists drowsiness as a side effect, however never met anyone that experienced this. But still good practice to take it in the evening (post workout) incase you are that guy. Of course tylenol for the headache and generalized pain. Use as the bottle directs. Finally you can add sudafed and mucinex. These will knock out the congestion, however can cause an increased heart rate and jittery feeling. So maybe use them as a last resort. If you have a temp greater than 100.3 than you should get checked out by your primary care. Hopefully some of this helps. continue to maximize hydration and rest.

  • I would not do your long run. Race this weekend is "shady" too if your not better. I'd rather be 100%healthy and slightly less fit than fit and not healthy. You still have to get to your race. Take a break.
  • It would be better for you to stand down and get better as you are getting closer to the race, than to try and get through workouts and prolong the illness or get yourself a full blown sinus infection. If you think you have a sinus infection, I'd get to a doc and get some antibiotics. Don't worry about missing the workout, one missed long run isn't going to derail you. You'd have to stand down for more 2 weeks or so to start losing significant fitness.
  • Thanks everyone for the advice! Honestly, the way my head feels right now, I don't think I could run for 2.5 hrs anyways :-(

I went to the doc today, and was put on Bactrim for Sinus infection, not sure if I have one or not, but I am trying to stop this before it heads south into my chest, like it usually does! Doc also gave me Nasonex, and a pill called Lodane for congestion. Hopefully, I will recover quickly, and live to fight another day!

THANK YOU for all the advice!
