The three hubs all do exactly the same thing in terms of information transmission. They all send the power signal out. The difference, as you point out, is the weight and the axle/bearings.
I have the Elite and a Garmin computer, so obviously it picks up a Garmin strap. It's possible that the default computer that comes with the Elite is "crippled" compared to the other hubs. I honestly don't know...but you can download the instruction manuals for them and see if they are identical. (I know the computer that comes with the Comp, for example, has many fewer functions, compared to the Pro+ computer.) But if you are buying a Joule or a Garmin and the "naked" hub, there is no difference in terms of information performance...only weight and bearings.
Just remember - the hub is just a transmitter...don't let anyone tell you that "it doesn't do heart rate" because none of them do...that part is all in the receiver/computer.
FWIW, my original wired PowerTap little yellow computer reads my Garmin 310XT chest strap just fine in terms of heart rate so I can't imagine any combo of head-unit and chest strap wouldn't work.
Found a better deal. I now have a Mavic open pro laced Pro+ and a Garmin 500 on the way. Can't wait. ~2 weeks and I'm ready to rumble. To bad my OS begins tomorrow!
Two years ago I had the same issue and did the test in week two for the bike. So I'd say if you have been doing some pre OS stuff just to use the heart rate guidelines and then do the bike test in week two or three.
My first ride on the powertap was a FTP test. I have a pretty good idea of my maximum heart rate so used that as a guide for the test and it worked out decent over the 42' test.
