Quarq question

I'll be purchasing a new road bike in the spring which will more than likely be BB30.  I am also looking at getting a Quarq to replace my PT rear wheel.  Question is, would I be able to use the Quarq on the road bike that is BB30 and on my P2 that has a standard Shimano BB.

Thanks

Dave

  • Dave, I just started using power last Feb and I went thru this, IIRC. I ended up buying the compatible bottom bracket (GXP, I think, from Quarq, thru Rich) x2, one for road and one for tri. Now, I just move the crank from bike to bike. Like you, I use Shimano stuff and, IIRC, it was not compatible, at least the bb wasn't.

I may get some correction here from someone else in da Haus, tho.

  • I was asking my LBS this same question as I was looking on ebay for a new road frame and didn't want my quarq to be imcompatible. there's some sort of OSBB/BB30 adapter, I was told. The one the LBS showed me was made by Zipp, but I understand there's others too.
  • @Dave - yes and I do it every week in the spring and fall. My TT bikes are all standard thread BBs and my road bike is BB30. The swap is still a piece of cake and the adapter costs less than $30.

Here is the adapter that I use to put a SRAM GXP crank in my BB30 bike: http://wheelsmfg.com/content/view/892/67/
  • Thanks everyone. You have made my day with the info. Now I just need to sell my wife on the idea.....
  • Just show her the price of a new SRM and then show her the Quarq.  It's not how much it cost, it's how much you save!  My wife uses this trick on me all the time.

PS: Yes, I also can verify what others have said, I run a GXP bottom bracket and can switch (I have an older SRM on my TT bike, so I don't need to, but easily could).

  • @matt - just to clarify for my not so technical brain...is your quarq crank a BB30 or a standard shimano crank? Just making sure I have it straight in my head.
    Thanks
  • Dave - technically neither... I'll explain.

My quarq is a SRAM S900 GXP (which is now named the S975 which is the newer version of same crank with a UD carbon finish instead of a 3k weave).

The SRAM GXP cranks and bottom brackets are compatible with the standard threaded bottom brackets. They are compatible with the same bottom bracket that a "standard shimano" as you called it is, however the SRAM crank cannot use the Shimano bearings as the SRAM crank spindle is tapered from 24 mm to 22 mm.

To make it easier... here is exactly what you need for your P2 and your BB30 bike.

Crank - buy a SRAM S975 GXP Quarq in the size and chainrings you want.

P2 - Remove current crank and Bottom Bracket. You can sell both if you want. Replace the current bottom bracket you have with a SRAM or Truvativ English Thread Bottom Bracket. This should be about $35 dollars for the standard or if you want to waste some money you can get the ceramic version for $200. Before installing it, put on one of the magnet rings that will come with the quarq. Install the crank.

BB30 Road bike - Remove just the crank and leave your current BB30 BB bearings in. Push the wheels manufacturing adapter I mentioned above, note that the sides are different and marked drive and non-drive side. Glue on the quarq magnet. Install the crank.

Literally that is everything you have to do. I'm glad to answer other questions you have as it can be very confusing.
  • Thanks for the detail, I have it now. I should have said standard SRAM and not Shimano.
