HIM Execution ??

Scheduled for Beach 2 Battleship HIM at the end of the month.  I have done this race every year (4th one I think).  Joined EN about 6 weeks out last year and started with power about 4 weeks out from race.  On race day last year, didn't take my Garmin 500 out of auto turn off mode so when I got on the bike had to turn it on and it never gave me accurate watts. So this year trying to be sure I get my set up correct so I have a chance to get the power (Quarq) numbers right from the start.   Suggestions would be great!!!

One other execution question is related to cold weather racing.  The last couple of  years the temp is in the 30s getting maybe to the low 40s by the time my wave goes (old man so late......).  I have tried putting a Body Armour shirt on over my jersey and arm warners and both are really hard to get on when you are wet!!!   Transition times way too long!!!  Any suggestions here??? Would rather not wear the arm warmers under the wetsuit but might be willing to try if that is the most efficient.

Overall trying to find some time where I can.  Trying to get the 5 hr mark!!!!

Thanks in advance!!!!

  • Joe, check out this page.  Lots of good info and at the bottom is the race execution stuff.

  • My experience with the edge 500 is that the battery lasts forever. I disable the "auto power down" and leave it, powered-on, on my bike in T1. As for the arm warmers, I'm not much help. The only time I've worn them was in a tri where the swim was cancelled!
  • Don't wear them on the swim. Just have them gently rolled or folded. Your goal in T1 if you're really pushing for a PR is to just to get them onto your wrist. Once you're safely out of T1 and past the mount line just sit up, take a breath, and let your HR slow down. You'll be a little more dry and have better fine motor skills; nwo get them to length and focus on riding.
  • Joe, if it's really going to be in the 40's at the start of the bike, instead of arm warmers rolled up onto your arms after the swim, you might consider a bike jersey that zips all the way down (so you don't have to put it on over your head - impossible to pull down over wet body or shirt), or a light weight nylon jacket, or even a podium jacket. Wind chill at 18-22 mph at that low temp can be a killer.

  • Thanks to all for the advice.  Just checked the weather for B2B and showing showers with lows in the 40s and highs around 60!!!  Obvious question is what to wear on the bike???  @Al, sounds like the nylon jacket might be the best or just put the arm warmers on and go (only doing the HIM so might be able to deal with it).  Hard to know what to do since I will already be wet from swim and trying to get warm and dry???

Hoping the forecast is like most and wrong this far out but who knows!!!

    Advice is much appreciated!!!
