Quarq with Joule 2.0

OK, I'm getting closer to pulling th eplug on the Quarq.  The next question I have is, should I keep the Joule I have or sell it as well and buy a Garmin 500.  If I stay with the Joule will I need anything to make the them work properly together?  I've heard of needing a speed sensor to wake the Joule up.

Thanks

Dave

  • My advice is always to run a Garmin Edge 500 (or 310, 910, or 800) with the quarq as they work really well with the quarq, do not require a speed sensor, and will soon have TSS/IF/NP.

If you want to keep the joule, you are correct and you will need a speed sensor to stop and start recording. Additionally, you may need to email saris support to get a private beta firmware for the joule for the calibration to reliably work correctly. (this may be fixed now but as of a few months ago it was still a known issue).

One other thought: Garmin has shown that they continue to update and support most (but not all) of their devices when a new one is released. For example, they are still putting out new firmware for the 310XT to add features even with the 910 released. Time will tell if Saris continues to support and add features to the current Joule when the new one comes out.
  • Thanks for the input.
  • Just got my quarq and joule the other day and have been playing with it. I can't seem to get the manual calibration to work. The quarq manual says to activate the sensor by pedaling backwards a few times and position the crank at 6 o'clock. I then go into the Joule and go to the sensor and select the activated sensor, scroll down to manual and press the toggle to manually zero. It reads bad data. When I pedal backwards I get 0 and -500 in the manual zero, which is what quarq says to do for auto zero. It also says to not apply pressure or movement during the manual zero. which makes no sense that it gives the reading when it is moving and won;t when it is stationary. I am a little frustrated....ugh. I am sure it is me, any suggestions Quarq users? Also, anyone know if the garmin ant sensor (node1
  • @Michael - you may want to just call Quarq directly. They are very helpful and can talk you through this. I know that as of a few months ago the only way to get a manual zero to work was to upgrade the Joule to a beta firmware that you have to have someone at Saris email to you.

Sadly it looks like Garmin is not going to continue updating the 310xt afterall

Yeah, that is disappointing as they were much better than others about supporting older devices.

  • I did call them this morning to verify they are still going to offer this for the 500 as I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on one of these. The lady talked to another person and said the 500 is still going to be done and scheduled for Q3 of this year. She wouldn't give me a more firm date than that.
  • Thanks Matt,

I just spoke with Saris and they sent me the firmware update.  It sucks, they give you a software disk this is irrelevant and tell you nothing about it until you get home with it and realize it doesn't work.  When you talk to them they act like they know nothing.  Not great customer service
