IMLP lodging

I know there was a thread about this a few months back...but looking into lodging now and good god is it pricey up in Placid!!! Anyone know of a smaller b&b type place or cheaper hotel that they found tolerable to stay at leading up to race day?? I don't need anything fancy, just something not too far from the race site.  Since Ive never been in that area, I figured anyone else's experiences would be great.  Thanks!

  • All I can offer is what I experienced last year. It seemed imperative to book early, so we did. At the Marriot Courtyard. Deal was 5 nights minimum, $300/night. When I was checking in, a couple on a motorcycle pulled up with no reservations. It was Wednesday evening. The desk clerk quoted them $100/night weekdays, $200/night weekend. Even apologized to them about the weekend rate saying "we have to go up this weekend, we've got the triathlon in town." I was hot and asked the clerk why we were being charged $300 every night. He basically said "you knew the rate we were charging when you made your reservation."

I remember someone, I think Gordon, who sent out an note about 2 weeks before the race listing plenty of places still available and many were much cheaper than what I paid. I think the lodging deal gets over hyped a bit. Seems like a good opportunity for some to get a team condo or 2 and split the bill. Others can chime in as I've only been there for 1 race.
  • Lauren,

Yes the hotel cost in LP can be crazy.  In small towns IM locations like LP hotel booking depends upon your comfort level with later bookings and how close you want to be to the race start.  I tend to delay my hotel booking and even find a good date to book are the days right around the WTC withdrawal of June 7th 2012, particularly the day of and day after.  June 7th is the exact day that I booked by room on for 2011 at Placid Bay Inn $195/night (the final evenign was 130) for 6 nights and some rooms had the 5-6 night minimun.

I have also heard of last minute stories about walk up and vacancies which I'm sure do happen but I can't leave it that long myself as I don't want to stay outside of LP myself.

I have attached the list that Dave mentioned.  This was provided by my volunteer captain on July 11, 2011 just 13 days before the race.  While I can't personally vouch for any of these places perhaps it will give you an idea who to call.

  • My wife and 3 year old stayed at a very basic, but very clean Maple Leaf Inn...I think the total cost was about $800 for 4 nights. Its walking distance to the start line. There is a pool there for the family and the owners are very friendly. The rooms are not very large but you can make it work.
I would recommend it....last year I had to call around to about 10 places before I found a spot so I jumped on whatever I could get.
