Daily multi-vitamin/multi-mineral

Do any of you guys take a multi-vitamin or multi-mineral supplement on a daily basis?  I used to, and I really feel that I should be doing so now.  I know that a balanced diet could take the place, but, I also know that it is important to make sure I get what my body needs and real life sometimes causes me to maintain a less balanced diet than I would like.

Suggestions?  I used to take a product from Amway call Double X, and their big thing was that the coating on their vitamin dissolved very quickly, insuring that what was in the vitamin actually got into a person's system and didn't just sit inside the capsule to eventually be...passed.

Thanks for the help!

  • Stephen,

I think I'm not stepping too far out there by saying that most healthcare providers recommend a daily multiple now. While the drum beat of "balanced diet" is the ideal, most of us do not eat a balanced diet due to time constraints. That said, IMO there are better supplements than others. I prefer NON-MLM products (ie: Amway) only on the premise that the salesforce is motivated by the $$$ as their end result primarily and not the quality of the product. Again...IMO.

There is also the natural vs synthetic, whole food vs therapeutic dosage issues.

I have no affiliation with Base Nutrition but know that their multi is a decent product. Sorry to cut this short but I've got to go work.

  •  I personally don't take multivitamins as I don't think they are necessary as long as you're eating some fruits, veggies, and getting outside for some vit. D. There are a wide variety of vitamins, from the good to the bad. A good site that evaluates them and their claims is here. tom

  • I've gone back and forth with multivitamins over the past 5 or so years.  For the past 1-2 years I really haven't taken any and haven't noticed a big difference.  That being said, if I feel a cold coming on or I feel like I'm getting sick, I will start pumping my body with zinc and multi-vitamins (usually just use various forms of Emergen-C).  That seems to help when compared with the times I forget or get lazy and don't do it.

This topic makes me wonder, though, whether I am getting enough nutrients in my daily diet.  Are there guidelines for how much we should get of various vitamins?  Specifically, I'm wondering whether there are guidelines for athletes or more active people (I'm guessing these may be slightly different than the average FDA guidelines, but I may be wrong...)

  • I had not been taking any vitamin until I started this OS and got through about the first four weeks.  I normally have a pretty good balance to my diet and I only regularly take a calcium supplement.

I was getting so tired that I was sleeping away most of my evening and family time.  Once I started taking a multi-vitamin I was much less tired.  I don't know if it is the intensity of the OS (this is my first OS) or work and school or all three, but this winter the vitamins have helped a lot.
