Kicking for balance and body position are definitely important, but more than that the kick drives the rotation/reach of the torso. Sounds like that's what TP has in mind.
Kick timing is as important as kick efficiency. When the kick is mis-timed, it is neutral at best, and at worst is a detriment to the entire stroke. A poorly-timed kick can create a lurch to the side as the kick causes an over-rotation of the hips and a corresponding sinking of that side of the body. It is most definitely all connected! Working with a good coach is extremely helpful to tackle this area.
The kick directly affects propulsion, but not in the sense of a propellor behind you more in the sense of how it facilitates using your entire body in a coordinated fashion.
re When the kick is mis-timed, it is neutral at best, and at worst is a detriment to the entire stroke. Now that I've done a few workouts where the timing is (for the most part) improved, I REALLY notice when I have a few strokes or a length when the timing is off.
2nd session today. still no underwater camera, no video this time. not worried about that, it's the coaching I'm really after.
She was happy with the progress with rotation. I won't dwell on it. will continue to do some of these sets in the upcoming workouts. She was ready to move on to something that you guys have already caught.
The entry has been too steep. And the catch and pull is forced to be way too short, thus ineffective. You've seen it, today I felt it. She warned me that this habit may be a little harder to break and to be patient. We may even focus on it again with the next session.
All in all, felt good swimming in front of the trained eye this time. Was real nervous about that last time. Felt more confident and stronger, and comfortable.
Endless Pool feel was better, but, I was happy to hear that she wants me to join in at one of her master's practices (she's on deck coaching). She wants to see the swim in the pool as opposed to on the treadpool.
So far, so good. Baby steps.
IMLP 1:23 in '08. goal for IMFL in '12 is 1:15. Watch it happen, people!
