Swim Start Positioning

What is the latest recommendation on how/where to seed yourself for the start? I know Al recommended a spot just to the right of center. Is that still the best? Whenever I see pics of the start it looks crowded everywhere.

  • It's good advice. I started there last year. This year I'm lining up right, more toward the front. I much prefer being passed/run over than running into people. Especially in TTL where you can't see anything in front of you.
  •  There will be 100's more people than pervious years, so I think no spot will be better than any other as far as crowding. I watched the start last year from above, on the bridge. I stand by my suggestion, mainly to "cut the tangents" on the way out. Starting next to the buoys or the wall is the most crowded. Since it is a deep water start, there is less banging at the beginning as everyone gets up to speed. After the first 100 meters, watch out for the general drift to the left of the crowd, while the course curves to the right! The key is seeding yourself front to back correctly based on your speed.

  • I'm going to draft off Stark
