Bike Flying Dismount

I know we are not allowed to do the flying mount, but is it legal for age groupers in an IM to dismount the bike with their shoes still attached to the bike? Recommended?

  • Any issues with the shoes falling off the pedals? Would hate to lose my tri shoes. Do I need to put my name in my Shoes?
  • I've left my shoes on the bike at every IM I've done, never lost them. I put my race number on with a Sharpie on the outside at the heel, just in case.

  • Thanks Al....I will follow that advice.
  • They have bike handlers so you dismount and hand off your bike and leave it behind. I'm guessing that even if your shoe fell off, the volunteer bike handler would pick it up and make sure it didn't get lost somewhere.
  • Cool. Thanks guys.
  • For what it's worth, #7 Under Bike Course Rules & Instructions in the athlete info guide states; "Shoes must be placed in the athlete's bike-to-run gear bag in transition and may not be attached to the pedals. Only professional athletes may attach shoes to pedals."
I thought this was kind of strange since people do it all the time. May be something you want to ask at race meeting.
  • I noticed they mentioned that as well. I was assuming they made a mistake and meant that age groupers had to have their bike shoes in the "swim-to-bike" bag. I think I will just try leaving them on the bike when I dismount and if they tell me to take them I will grab them.
  • I assume they meant prior to T1. I've left my shoes on my bike after finishing the ride in every race i've done.

  • Shoes and helmet are NOT allowed on the bike in T1. Those are placed in your T1 bag and you put those on in the changing tent or on the way to your bike in T1 after the swim.

For every IM I've come out of my shoes about a half mile from T2, dismount before the bike dismount line and a volunteer takes the bike. I take the helmet off as I'm running to my T2 bag, tent, etc.
