Neoprene Caps for little heads

While IMCDA is still a loooong way away, I know one of the biggest things I need to gain confidence in for that race is swimming in cold water.  I know I'll need a neoprene swim cap or whatever to deal with the cold water, and with my smallish head I figure this might take some trial and error to find the right one.

So do any of you ladies have recommendations for neoprene caps (especially if you also have a smallish head/face)?

  • oooh- and add booties to this question too. My feet are size 5.5 and the last time I tried to use one of those triathlon swim booties they just filled with water and became a huge drag net!
  • Blue Seventy makes the nicest neoprene cap I know of, and it comes in different sizes:

My Crater Lake swimmers mostly used these this summer (6.4 mile swim, 55 - 58 degrees) and all were comfy. I unfortunately used a strap that had a velcro closure and got the world's biggest rash on my neck where it rubbed. I will be buying a BlueSeventy cap before CdA!!!

Booties: I have yet to meet a swimmer who didn't say that they filled up with water. I have found that I haven't needed them, even in water as cold as Crater Lake for extended times (2.75 hours), and that's even though I need my wooly booly socks and neoprene booties on every bike ride!

  • I'm new to EN, start the OS monday   I used a Blue Seventy neoprene cap for IMSG this year, and it was awesome. The rest of me was frozen, but my head was fine! Some of the other ladies I talked to wore two silicone swim caps and were fine with that. The booties are just kind of a waste, unless you find yourself training in cold water frequently. If you put them on before your wetsuit, and make sure the tops are in the suit, they will not fill with water as badly, but they do still end up taking on water. I only use them to swim in the spring when the water is completely murky and cold, I would never race in them.

  • THanks ladies! I'll try the Blue Seventy first and let you know how it works out. Robin- I can totally relate to the need for both wooly booly and booties on the bike !! Smartwool is my best friend!
  • yes, thanks, I'll be getting a blue seventy cap for CDA. and very good to know about the booties...
