Insteresting Barefoot Running Article

Has anyone ever done "100-Up's" or "the Major" talked about on page 5 as training exercises?

  • I read that article last night. I was wondering about both the minor and major too.
  • John - found this vid of the 100-Ups. I am a visual learner so I needed to see this.

  • Never heard of it, very cool! However, Chi Running has a similar drill. I switched to Chi Running and FiveFinger shoes about 5 years ago and haven't had a single running injury since (before that I had ITBS, shin splints, and plantar fasciitis). Ditto with my hubby (before switching, he had "bad knees" and a tendency to get neuromas on his feet). Gonna have to start on some Minors now...
  •  Yup, Chi Running drills + VFFs for me too.  Still haven't had the courage to run more than 10 in them though.  After that I switch to my lightweight Mizunos although I've been thinking about trying a Nike Free or something similar

You'd probably like the Nike Frees then, esp. if you're doing that kind of mileage in the VFFs.  I use Nike Frees for racing Tri's and I really like them for my "next best thing to VFFs" shoe. After I got my first pair, I've never been able to go back to my old Asiics running shoes, they just feel so stiff, heavy, and clunky to me now.

I did a 24 mile trail run this summer in the VFF's, but hadn't gone more than 11 or 12 miles before that in them. They were fine, feet felt good. On trails, I find that I trip a lot less over roots and rocks in the VFFs, and no elevated heel to turn your ankle over. I run in the Bikila LS for trails, with a pair of toe socks for extra cushioning as many of our trails are crushed gravel. Love 'em!

  • Nike just came out with the Free+Shield, with a waterproof and very reflective upper, with an integrated tongue. I've been running in Frees for several years now, but upgraded to the Free+Shield recently, and will use them for IMAZ. The new version are more like tri-specific shoes, if you ask me.

In the out/off-season, I will be moving to use my VFFs a little more as well, where I only use them to walk around now.
  • I watched the video that Brenda posted and I'll try to include these in the week somehow.  I did some before my run on Friday to get a feel for the motion and I think it helped me keep solid form throughout my run.

Today, I ended up taking my daughter for a hike instead of getting my long run in.  Easy flat trail, so I (probably looked like an idiot) but was doing100-ups behind her for 3.5 miles.  Calves are feeling it. Maybe there is something to these.

  • Here's an interesting response to the NY Times article:
