How soon after Goofy for HIM?

I'm doing the Goofy in early January (doing NY Marathon tomorrow). A group from work is doing the LoneStar HIM on April 1. I had originally planned on doing the Gulf Coast Half mid-May. I thought it would take 2 - 3 weeks to recover from the Goofy. Does that give me enough time to taper and train for a 4/1 HIM?

  • I would say yes, but I think the answer is individual. Partly based on how well you recover and how fast you are trying to race each event, i.e. are these your two A races for the year or is one of them a B type affair? I would say its close together for two A races, but as long as one or the other is a training level, B-sort of race that you aren't going to be disappointed if you don't go your fastest then I would say go ahead.

FWIW, I'm signed up for Lonestar on April 1st and am planning on racing the Lake Placid Loppet (50K XC-Ski Marathon on Feb 4th). Of the two, the Loppet is going to be an A-effort for me in the sense that I've never skied a race that long before and am really looking forward to gearing up for the challenge. Lonestar is going to be a steady-B type race for fun that I will be trying to train through as best I can in preparation for IMLP in July.
  • @Penny, didn't you have a tough year with your knee and now you are doing NYC TODAY, RIGHT NOW as I type this? I think going right to Goofy and right to a HIM is a lot to ask of your body, regardless of your performance goals. I'd either cap it with Goofy and so some shorter races with a late season Half or do your plan but then make sure to take off 2-3 months in the middle of your year!
  • @Patrick: Yes, you are right. This has been a challenging year both physically and mentally. Knees are actually doing great right now and came through the marathon just fine. I'm going to wait until after the Goofy to make any plans for the rest of the year. Thanks for the reality check.
