Garmin and WKO giving diff power

Noticed that last week for RR my garmin lap avg power and WKO avg power were different. So I tracked it this week and they are very different. Example for 10 min at Z 3 on Sat Garmin says lap avg power was 185 and WKO say it was 169. Is this nommal or do I need to adjust something in WKO or the Garmin 500?  Also since I used WKO to determine my FTP and thus all my zones are they no longer valid?. I have a race next Sunday and am freaking a little.  Thanks

  • Generally they should be very close. Are you using the auto pause feature on the Garmin? If so turn it off. That is a known issue that throws off calculations.
  • My Joule 2.0 gives diff IF than WKO+, with almost every other metric identical. Still never been able to figure out why.
  • That happened to me for a while on the 705. The 500 may be throwing out zeros (I think that's the default setting). What this means is that when you are coasting the Garmin doesn't factor in the zero power time into its average, while WKO and Trainingpeaks do include that time as part of the average (which lowers the number). Page 30 of the Garmin 500 User Manual will tell you how to check and change the setting.

Interestingly, I have found that the average power excluding zeros is almost identical to the noramlized power for the particular interval. Not sure why that would be, but it's a cheap approximation of real time NP on the Garmin.
  • @ Tom No auto pause. First thing I disabled. I had more than enough issues with my 405 previously to even think about using the auto pause. Thanks for the rapid response.

@ Michael. I bet that is it. Just turned the no zero avg off. I have a ride tomorrow so will see if that fixed it. Thanks for the rapid response. I'll also pay attention to see if the Lap Avg Power on mine runs with the NP on WKO. Thanks again.
