Splicing SRM wiring

I have a SRM V wired power meter on an S&S coupled tri bike.  I'd like to splice in a connector in the cable by the bottom bracket so I don't have to upwrap the cable from the head unit to the bottom bracket when I take the bike apart.  Does anyone know whawt I might be able to use?  It is a 4 lead cable.  I want the connector to be pretty small.  Maybe there are some people in the electronics biz that can help.  I've googled and looked online quite a bit and I'm not really finding what I want.  So any ideas would be helpful.  And don't worry, my Dad's a tv repair man and has an ultimate set of tools.  I can fix it.

  • Off topic, but what frame did you add the couplers to? Did you do this as aftermarket?

I looked into something similar last year, and the electronics shop at my local Future Shop (think 'Best Buy') said it was a easy, while-you-wait job for them.
  • I don't know but I would think if you took it to an electronics shop they could figure it out and do it for you.

I do a lot of wrenching on my motorcycles but I don't know anything about wiring, electronics, etc. I wish I had them tools and a friend who could walk me through how to do quality work like that.

  • I'm no electrician, but I have played one on TV before. :-)

I've done stuff like this before for my car stereos, for cars where I'd have a big ol subwoofer, and put quick disconnect on it in case I need to take it out.

I'd think more Radio Shack for parts and tools (if you don't have them already). The gauge of the wire, along with how much slack you have, will probably be the most important considerations. I'd also imagine that you'd want unique connectors and/or colors, so there's no connecting the wrong leads.

Also, I imagine that your SRM, if it's wired, is out of warranty, right? If you're still in the warranty period, be cautious - as your modifications will void it.
  • Scott, I checked RS and others like that. Not finding anything there. I'll check an electronics shop as Rich suggested. @Dave T, I built the frame with the couplers. I have a frame shop in my garage. Small scale...a couple frames a year. I have one in the jig now with the main triangle about done and starting to fit up the rear end. THEN came IM training...so there it sits until IMAZ is done. Then I'll be back at it. Good thing my customer/friend is understanding! OHHH the free time I'll have...until OS!
  • Kurt, Try a auto parts store and ask for a connector with however many wires you need for the connection. It would likely be a larger connector than you want but the nice thing is that you can get a "weatherpack" connector that will be waterproof. If you splice it in by soldering and then use heat shrink tubing nothing will be shorting/grounding out. If you can't find anything locally let me know how many wires and I will get something at the store (I've got several dozen both new and used), if you aren't trying to accomplish pre-IMAZ I can put in the truck and deliver at the race!
  • Thanks for the offer Mike. I found a pair of mini screw together connectors in the Grainger catalog. I'll try to post up a pic when I get it done. yeah...ef with the power meter the weekend before the race!
