Camp Schedule

Day 0 -- Wednesday, April 11th: campers arrive in Monrovia, CA. Airports:

  • LAX -- about 45 miles from Monrovia
  • Burbank -- about 25 miles away
  • Ontario -- about 35 miles away.

Day 1 -- Thursday, April 12th:

4-5 mile run, swim clinic, Chantry Flats Time Trial, then Rich’s favorite “Urban Climbing” ride.

Rich will lead a 4-5 mile moderately hilly run before a 2hr swim clinic with underwater video critique. In the afternoon you’ll time trial up Chantry Flats Road, 3.2 miles at 5-6% grade and 1100ft gain, before climbing another 3-4k on a very hilly route through the neighborhoods of the San Gabriel Valley.

Day 2 -- Friday, April 13th: Run, Big Climbing Day -- Angeles Crest Highway.

Rich will lead a challenging 8 mile run in the hills of Monrovia. We’ll then do a 4-5hr climbing ride with at least 8000ft of gain.

Day 3: -- Saturday, April 14th, Monster Climbing Day -- Baldy Ski Lifts

Rich will lead a flatter 6 mile run before we hit the roads for a monster climbing day, to include the Mt Baldy Ski Lifts, a classic climb in the area that will be THE featured mountain top finish of the Amgen Tour of California -- 5 miles at 8-16% grade...oh, then you’re going to ride your bike back to Monrovia.

Day 4 -- Sunday, April 15th -- Long Run

We’ll finish the camp with a 1:30-45 long run on varied terrain.

SoCal Camp Cancellation Policy:

The total camp fee minus $150 is refundable for withdrawals up until February 15th, 2012. 50% refund for cancellations before March 15th. No refunds for cancellations after March 15th.

  • Sounds very cool. If work slows up by then I'd be game for this or is there maybe a chance The Strauss Crib still needs a handy man over haul as an entry fee. Hee-Hee
  • Here's what i think-can I get clarification?
Since my A race is IMLP in July and this camp is in February, I'd really not be expecting this to give me a great boost in terms of my A race, but it would be something to do because it sounds cool, would get me out of the Boston cold, and would be cool. RIght?
  • FYI, I'm going to look at the calendar and move this date to late March or early to mid-April. I took a look at my current fitness...and the schedule for the camp...and recognized a not insignificant disconnect . Will also be warmer, this route I want to do will be clear of snow, gives people more time to line things up, etc.

    I'll make the change tomorrow.

Trent, YES, I still needs lots of handyman work. Let me know if you're available

  • This would be a great BTW leading into Oceanside...but not if you move it to April. True winter training - we might need chains on our tires for the Baldy climb.
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I was actually trying to make this happen as it would only be 2 days off of work as it leads into my school vacation. Plus I found a flight for under $300.
  • A Feb climb up Mt Baldy = freezing
  • Hey Rich, this looks awesome! I'll give this some thought. Since I live in Pasadena, would it be possible to lodge at my home and commute to Monrovia day by day if I choose to join? If so, would this free up resources for another athlete to join in? I'm sure this will be in camp high demand. image

Yeah, my work schedule is already booked thru Feb, but not yet for March or April. Sounds like just the right time for a short swift kick in the rear.

  • Ok, I've made the dates TBD. Let's talk in this thread about what works for the most people.

This would need to be deconflicted from Cali70.3, March 31st, and Wildflower, May 4-6. So I'm now thinking:

    • April 12-15, or
    • April 19-22

I'd also consider shortening the camp to three days, getting rid of the swim clinic and replacing the long run with another long ride. So camp would be 3 days of ~6-8mile run + 3-5hrs climbing, per day. I'd like to be done riding by 2-3pm on Sunday so we could eat and get everyone on redeye flights home that evening.

    Thoughts?

  • Hi Rich,

Given the IMTX Camp the weekend of 4/26-29, maybe 4/12-15 would be better. Would also be a full month out from IMTX. I'm potentially in. I for one would appreciate the swim tune up.

    Neil
  • Neil,

Yes, I'm leaning towards that weekend also, to create more separation from Wildflower. However, the IMTX camp market is not the market for this camp: if you're racing IMTX and can get to that camp...you're going to do that camp, not this one.

  • Wow, I'm in LA working on 4/11 (Golden Gods Awards), but I may be working on 4/12 as well, this could work out for me (at least 3 of the 4 days).
  • Crap. Might be a little to close to wildflower for me. (travel , work , etc...). We shall see though. Love to come and work on the Strauss crib the week before but not sure how the logistics would work for tools, materials, etc.. I'll keep thinking .........
  • Would we need to rent a car if we are flying out for this camp???
  • No need to rent a car for this
  • This camp is not going to happen.

I'm now looking into do something in the South East, preferrably north Georgia mountains, in July, as I'll be out on the east coast for IMLou and IMWI training camps. I'll start another thread about that.

  • Dino

When I cobble together a minimum of bike fitness to not completely embarrass myself, I'll put together an all-hands ride and lunch thing for all EN SoCal folks.

I'm also working with PTC to do a talk for the Pasadena Tri, an HIM -specific training and racing seminar, and a swim clinic, all in March.

  • I've been a little out of the loop as of late but this camp was definitely on my radar to pull the trigger on as soon as I could confirm the dates. Need to knock some serious fitness into myself heading into this summer, but I agree the agenda would have been seriously challenging at my current fitness level.

Definitely will try to stay posted about any future EN SoCal events though.
  • Hey Trevor, I plan to come down to Oceanside for the race. I will be driving. If you're not racing, maybe you and I could hook up on the run course and then meet everyone for pizza and beers afterward at Boardwalk Brewery (or Pizza, Cafe, I forget which)
  • Rich, I think Oceanside was sold out by the time I moved out here so I am not racing, but I'm definitely down to show up to the race and show some support. I'm guessing there is an Oceanside race group somewhere I should check out, but I've got a place for any EN'rs to crash who might be traveling to the race as well. Caveat is it's about a 35 min drive to Oceanside to PB, but not horrible.
  • I might take you up on the room, if the team decides to do a dinner the night before. Otherwise I'll drive down early race morning.
