What kind of TSS should we be seeing with OS Biking

Is there a typical range we should be scoring with TSS for the OS riding that most of us are doing right now?

Does it even matter what the TSS is if we are hitting the intervals?

  • Don't worry about TSS right now. RnP want us to focus on the work during the intervals. OS isn't the time to measure TSS. that's the summary. you'll get more details from smarter folks soon....
  • Have been told to ignore TSS during OS. Just hit your intervals and if you are dying to do more work on bike then finish your time up with more 80-85%.
  • Jason,

As others have said don't worry about it.  There a was a great post last year on "Focusing on What Matters In the OS" which is now in the Wiki by WSM Mike G:

  • Gordon, I missed that when it came around. Thanks for posting it. Great refresher as I start getting my mind ready for the Jan OS.
  • Over the years we've found that the TSS model isn't perfect and can underestimate the fatigue created by intensity. That is, 100 TSS as an easy to moderate ride/run is very different from 100 TSS accumulated through OS-type interval work.

Instead, you should track your performance on specific interval sessions week to week, benchmarking yourself and trying to improve in every session. IOW, Tues vs Tues, Wed vs Wed, stuff like that.

  •  TSS model heavily favors duration over intensity and may lead you to believe that your training load is low. Don't get suckered into that belief. Like everybody said above, hit intervals at the prescribed intensity, if you are feeling exceptionally peppy, hit some 80-85%. If you did too much, you may not know until week later. Keep your logs handy.
