Marathon Nutrition

I have run plenty of marathons and feel pretty confident in my fueling/hydration knowledge & strategy...of course I felt that way about triathlons unitl I was preparing for my first IM last year and learned alot (out of necessity) about fueiling/hydration and Electrolytes for the long course...

Clearly the events are different 12 hrs for my IM and what I hope to be just over 3hrs for my Marathon....but I was wondering what the prevailing wisdom on the team was about the need for/use of Electrolyte supplements for a Marathon.

My iniclinataion is that it is unnecessary as there will be sufficient electorlytes in gels/sports drink available...unless I were a 4hr. plus marathoner on a hot humid day.

Any comments would be of interest.

Thanks,

  • Personally I'll take a S cap or two in morning of race and use more salt preceeding race but any cramping I'd get during a low 3 hour mary that wasn't brutally hot/humid would probably be performance related. Of course it is recommended you stay hydrated during race and obtain some electolytes from gels/sports drinks.
Probably falls under heading of what can it hurt to make sure you have enough sodium on board race morning and haven't flushed your system by overhydrating on plain water leading up to race.
    Good luck! Jeff
