Garmin HRM watches backward compatibility

My Garmin Forerunner 405 strap broke this morning..  Yes, this is good.  I've had it for 3.5 years and refuse to upgrade without a good reason.  Now I've got one.  My question is whether a Garmin 910XT will pick up the HR using a 405 HR strap?  I don't want to pop for the new strap if the old works.  Plus, the old one is pretty new since I only use it maybe once a month.

  • Paul,

yes you can !! The key is that FR 405 ships an ANT+ HR Belt.  I have the same for my FR60 - this work with all Garmin FR which support ANT+, like the 910XT.  Check-out the review at DCRainmaker go to section Accessoires.

There is a package with the Softstrap HR, this one is easier to carry around in your back, but again not required. Some say the 50$ are better spend in a footpod and I kind of agreeing to that.

    Have fun...

  • Paul:

Ditto on Kai's response.  And... not to burst your new acquisition bubble, because any reason is a good reason to upgrade your techno-bling if you can... BUT... for those who need to save $ and can't buy a whole new you CAN buy a new 405 watch strap from Garmin.  I did so last year when mine broke.

  • @ Steve...actually the strap pin has torn through part of the plastic/rubber strap. For the shorterm, I cleaned it out, reinserted the pin without pulling on the strap, then put a lot of superglue in and around the seam. It held up fine this morning, but it's the beginning of the end. I'll go for the 910 when the strap breaks again, but maybe a new watch strap might allow me to keep the 405 in back-up! image
