Shawn, check out this link to understand the EN reasoning behind not swimming in the off season

So my take on that is, no swimming in the OS doesn't appear to hurt me (at least) — BTW, I expect to improve my swim over the season but probably not by that much.
FWIW
Cheers

Shawn,
Beyond the advice already given if you want to do swim workout there is also this wiki which has a link to OS swim workouts:

I'm a 1 hour 30 minute IM swimmer and did not do any swimming until 12-14 weeks out from my last IM. I actually went about 30 seconds faster than when I did swim training all year around for my first IM. Although I do admit to just swimming for this first IM, not a lot of technique or shorter swim sets al la EN.
If you are comfortable in the water and not jus learning to swim there is probably a better return on investment working the bike and run.
That's just my experience.

Shawn, last year was my 1st OS and I drank the Kool Aid and didn't swim until 2 months before my 1st race (a sprint) of the year and swam almost exactly the same as in previous years. It was a pool swim so very comparable.
This is my 3rd season in the Haus and up until know I have drank the kool-aid for almost everything that has been taught, which has proven to be mostly successful. 2011 was my first attempt in the triathlon world, and I jumped right into the deep-end with and IM. I stuck to the plan and did very little swimming during the OS. Unfortunately, this was probably a bad decision on my part since I am not a very good swimmer. I am finally starting to realize that the best advice the Haus can give is to follow the rules until they need to be adjusted, but then be smart about what you change. It all depends on what your goals are.
So for this season I plan on incorporating the swim hack into the OS including a once a week swim lesson with a 1-on-1 swim coach. I know that this will have an impact on both my bike and run performance, but I also know that in order to be successful in Mont Tremblant that I need to get out of the water this time.
Good luck,
Pete
Pete G - Good to hear that you are getting some 1-on-1 swim lessons. I have no doubt that you'll be ready for the swim in IMMT. Hope you had a nice Turkey Day. Give my best to Michelle. Bruce
